A single-serve coffee maker can help jump-start your morning. Switch it on, pop in a pod, and press start. Before you know it, you’ll have a piping hot cup.

At Consumer Reports, our pod coffee maker tests focus on finding the single-serve machines that are the most convenient and consistent, as well as the fastest. That’s because the coffee you get from a pod most likely won’t match the taste of coffee that comes from a top-performing drip brewer. Pod coffee simply isn’t as high quality, or as fresh-tasting, our experts say. But that doesn’t mean any model will do.

In our tests, we time the brew speed of the first cup and subsequent cups, note the temperature, and record the volume brewed to see whether it’s consistent. We also evaluate how easy it is to operate and clean each machine.

In addition to those factors, when you’re shopping for a new single-serve coffee maker, you’ll want to consider the type of coffee pods you want to use. “Keurig K-Cups offer a much greater variety of blends and coffee brands compared with Nespresso,” says Ginny Lui, who oversees CR’s coffee maker testing.

Below, we review the best pod brewers for each major coffee pod type, including Keurig K-Cups, Nespresso Original, and Nespresso Vertuo. We also give you our top-rated dual coffee maker, which brews both from pods and ground coffee. CR members can click on each model name for more detailed ratings and reviews.

Best Keurig K-Cup Brewer

The CR Recommended Keurig K-Café Smart is a top performer in our tests, delivering a first cup of coffee especially quickly and dispensing a uniform amount of coffee across multiple cups. It’s easy to use, too, whether you need to adjust brew strength or refill and clean the machine. This machine also packs in a ton of features, including a removable water reservoir, a built-in milk frother, WiFi connectivity, and programmability. There’s even a setting for espresso and coffee over ice.

Best Nespresso Original Brewer

The Nespresso CitiZ EN267BAE has a flashy stainless steel design with a clear, removable water reservoir and produces first and subsequent cups quickly. It comes with brew-strength controls to make a cup weaker or stronger to suit your taste. When making back-to-back cups, however, our testers found that temperatures weren’t always consistent. It does come with a milk frother, though, it’s programmable, and it has Wi-Fi connectivity. The Nespresso brand has an excellent owner satisfaction score but a middling predicted reliability score, based on CR’s member surveys.

Best Nespresso Vertuo Brewer

The Nespresso Vertuo Lattissima earns very good scores for first-cup speed, repeat-cup speed, and convenience, and has controls for brew size and strength, giving it a very good score for brewing range. This model is only mediocre in our temperature consistency tests across multiple cups, though that may not matter as much if you plan to add hot foam from the built-in milk frother.

Best Combination Brewer

The CR Recommended Hamilton Beach Advanced 5-in-1 (49965F) is a versatile machine that goes for a fraction of the price of some other machines on this list. (Granted, it doesn’t have a milk frother.) You can brew a single cup from either a K-Cup pod or ground coffee, or brew a full pot when you need one. In our lab tests using pods, we saw a very good single-serve first cup speed, though repeat-cup speed was mediocre. As for drip coffee, it aces our tests for brew performance, meaning the water temperature reached 195° F to 205° F for 5 to 6 minutes for optimal taste.
