Organize Your Refrigerator for the Holiday Season

Simple steps can maximize storage space and ensure that everything stays fresh for a festive meal

It’s all too easy to end up with food crammed every which way in your fridge before a holiday gathering. But a little planning is all you need to avoid wilted salad greens or a dripping turkey in with all your food.

The week before your holiday meal, try to use up what you already have. Then adjust the refrigerator shelves to hold the food you’ll need to store, like that turkey.

    More on Appliances

“Don’t block fridge air vents with large items,” says Larry Ciufo, who oversees CR’s refrigerator testing. “It can make the items freeze and cause other parts of your fridge to run too hot.”

Pro tip: “If you’re short on refrigerator space on the big day, a cooler can supply the extra storage you need,” says Kathi Lipp, a home expert and author. “In very cold areas, a cooler outside your home can help keep even perishables fresh. In warmer climates, use it for drinks to leave more room in the fridge for other holiday meal items.”

Here’s where to store holiday foods.
