Will Using a Space Heater Save You Money?

My den is always chilly. Should I use a space heater or turn up the heat in the whole house?

Using a space heater can be a good way to boost the temperature in a small, drafty room—and it could be less expensive than cranking up your central heating system. But it’s not a magic workaround for a high utility bill.

    More on Home Heating

A space heater is economical only if you use it judiciously. In general, electricity is pricier than natural gas, which is the most common type of whole-home heating fuel in the northern U.S. Space heaters should be used as supplemental heat, not as a substitute for a central system that warms your entire home.

Many of the space heaters we’ve tested are claimed to heat only about 150 to 200 square feet. Most use 1,500 watts when on the highest heat setting, which comes to about $2.10 per 8-hour day or about $64 a month, based on the average cost of electricity nationally.

To calculate how much you’ll spend using your particular space heater based on local electricity rates, follow these steps:

    1. Multiply your space heater’s wattage by hours of usage.

    2. Multiply the result from Step 1 by your local electricity rate per kilowatt-hour.

    3. Divide the result from Step 2 by 1,000.

Also remember to factor in the initial cost of the space heater. A number of high-performing models in our ratings are priced below $100, but others cost considerably more, making it less likely you’ll recoup that expense in energy savings.

It’s best to run a space heater only when you really need one, such as when you’re warming a room you’ll be in for a few hours at a time. Never leave space heaters on overnight or unattended for long periods because they can create a fire hazard. CR also recommends turning them off before bedtime and not relying on a timer.
