Jool Baby Nova Swing Recalled for Violating the CPSC’s Safe Sleep Rule

The swing will remain on the market but will get updated warning labels and decor

Jool Baby and the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall Thursday of over 63,000 Nova Swings, which are not safe for babies if used for infant sleep. There were no injuries reported in the Nova Swing, but the CPSC says its original design violates federal rules for safe sleep products.

The swing has an incline of over 10 degrees, which can pose risks similar to other recalled inclined sleepers, like the Fisher Price Rock ’n Play and others. Inclined products are safe for babies to play and lie in while awake and supervised, but if they fall asleep, they should be moved to a flat surface like a crib or bassinet to prevent suffocation, experts say.

This recall does not remove the Nova Swing from the market, and it does not offer a refund to customers. Instead, the company will send current owners of the product a free “update kit,” which Jool Baby says “will better communicate that the product is not intended for sleep.” To receive the update kit, owners of the product must request it from the company by going to JoolBaby.com/recall or calling 888-788-5665.

    More on Infant Safety

The kit includes updated warning label and assembly instructions that will explain its hazards more clearly. It also includes a new remote control that does not have a “sleep” button on it. Finally, the kit replaces the original plush toys hanging down over the baby (moon, star, and cloud) to a new set of “non sleep themed” toys (raindrop, sun, and cloud).

The updated version of the swing still plays music, and swings in a side-to-side swaying motion, according to listings online.

When asked why the company did not remove the swings from the market, a representative for Jool Baby wrote: "These are safe products when used as intended, and there is no reason to take them off the market. We have updated the current Jool Baby Nova Swings, in close cooperation with CPSC staff, to remove or redesign all features and themes that CPSC was concerned were sleep related."

CR’s safety experts do not believe the recall goes far enough.

“It is deeply disappointing that Jool isn’t offering its customers a full refund as part of this recall,” says Oriene Shin, policy counsel for Consumer Reports. “When a product violates the law, it is not enough for companies to paper over their safety issues. Parents deserve more than this from companies that they rely on for safe baby products.”

Only certain Nova Swings are affected by this recall. If you bought one after January 4, 2024, your swing has already been updated to the new design.

    Recall Details

Product recalled: Approximately 63,100 Jool Baby Nova Swings, manufactured from June 2022 through September 2023, and sold between November 2022 and November 2023. (To find the manufacture date of your swing, check the sewn-in warning label on the back of its seat.) Nova Swings currently for sale or purchased after January 8, 2024, have already been updated and are not affected by this recall.

Sold at: Walmart stores, and online via the Walmart website, Amazon, BabyList, Target, Jool Baby’s website, and other websites.

The problem: The swings pose a suffocation risk if used for infant sleep, and they do not sufficiently warn caregivers that they should only be used while babies are awake and supervised. They also have an angle greater than 10 degrees in violation of the CPSC’s Infant Sleep Products Regulation and the Safe Sleep for Babies Act.

The fix: Stop using the recalled swings for sleep, and contact Jool Baby to receive a free “update kit” that includes updated warning labels and assembly instructions, a new remote control, and new plush toys.

How to contact the manufacturer: Go to JoolBaby.com/recall or call 888-788-5665.
