Millions of furniture anchor kits, distributed with dressers or similar products sold by dozens of furniture manufacturers to prevent the furniture from tipping over, have been recalled, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday

The recalled kits were made by New Age Industries and consist of plastic zip ties, screws, and brackets (shown above) that customers use to secure bulky furniture to walls. According to the recall notice, the zip ties can become brittle or break over time, rendering them ineffective. The furniture companies have received two reports of these kits breaking but know of no injuries.

Furniture tip-overs are a common source of injury, even death, for children. Between 2000 and 2021, 482 children died from falling furniture, according to the CPSC. While there’s a new stability standard in place, CR safety experts continue to urge consumers to anchor their furniture.

    More on Furniture Tip-Overs

Anchor kits made by other manufacturers and consisting of materials other than plastic zip ties—like fabric straps or metal cords—are not affected by the recall.

The recall is a coordinated effort between the CPSC and the organization Alliance4Safety, as well as 31 furniture manufacturers that have distributed the kits with their furniture. The recalled kits were distributed along with furniture made in November 2019 or later.

To determine whether a dresser or other item you own is affected, check to see if it was made by one of the companies listed on the recall notice, and look for a manufacture date stamped on the furniture.

    Recall Details

Product recalled: New Age Industries furniture tip restraint kits that were sold and distributed with clothing units made by 31 furniture companies.

Sold at: Furniture stores nationwide and online from November 2019 through the present.

The problem: The zip ties in the kits can become brittle over time or break.

The fix: Check to see if your clothing storage unit has a date of manufacture sticker or stamp of November 2019 or later. If so, and if the tip kit contains plastic zip ties, contact Alliance4Safety for a free replacement tip kit. Keep children away from the unit while waiting for the replacement.

How to contact the manufacturer: Rather than calling the furniture manufacturer directly, go to the New Age Tip Restraint Recall Information page to start the replacement process.

To report a dangerous product or a product-related injury, go to SaferProducts.gov.
