No matter what your child wants to dress up as for Halloween, a few costume tricks can lead to a safe and fun night of treats. We've gathered a few tips below.

What to Wear and Avoid

1. Buy costumes that are labeled “flame resistant.”

2. Avoid baggy, billowing skirts and cloaks that might brush against a candle-lit jack-o'-lantern or luminary.

3. Be cautious when using makeup for face paint. Much of it isn't approved by the Food and Drug Administration and could trigger allergic reactions.

4. Never use decorative contact lenses because they can cause severe eye infections.

5. Make sure your kids won’t trip over their costumes, and avoid accessories like swords and canes that have sharp edges.

6. Be wary of masks that could block your child's vision.
