A 2017 Honda Ridgeline pickup, facing forward

Honda is recalling over 28,000 bed covers designed for its Ridgeline pickup trucks because parts of the cover can detach from the vehicle while the truck is in motion.

The recalled accessories, known as tonneau covers, fit 2017 through 2020 Ridgeline trucks and were sold mostly by Honda dealerships as Honda Genuine Accessories. These tonneau covers can cost an extra $700 to $1,000.

The recalled covers have a trifold design that allows them to be left partially open. If users do not properly secure the cover before driving or if they leave it partially open, wind resistance could lift the tonneau cover in a way that damages the hinges between the center and rear panels, causing the rear panel—the third of the tonneau cover closest to the tailgate—to detach.

To fix the problem, Honda dealerships will install a tether to keep the panel from separating.  They will also add warning labels to the tonneau cover itself and give owners an updated manual for the accessory.

In a written statement provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Honda said that it is aware of 20 reports of rear panels detaching, but it has no reports of injuries or crashes related to the problem.

Road debris—like a torn-off tonneau cover—can be dangerous. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, road debris caused more than 200,000 crashes resulting in over 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths between 2011 and 2014. Most of those crashes happened after drivers swerved to avoid debris and lost control of their vehicles, AAA study said. In addition to causing a crash, drivers of vehicles that leave debris in the road can be fined up to $5,000 in some states.

The Details

Parts recalled: 28,885 Honda Genuine Accessories tonneau covers that may be installed on 2017 through 2020 model year Honda Ridgeline pickup trucks.

The problem: Rear panels of tonneau covers may detach because of wind resistance. This could be dangerous for other drivers on the road.

The fix: Honda dealers will attach a tether to ensure that the rear and center portions of the tonneau cover remain attached. The recall is set to begin Oct. 26, 2020.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Honda customer service at 888-234-2138.

NHTSA campaign number: 20E068. Honda’s own number for this recall is F8M.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
