2009 Mazda6 recalled for airbag replacement

Mazda is recalling about 117,000 vehicles from 2003-2012 model years to replace passenger-side airbags previously installed as a temporary fix to the deadly risk posed by Takata-sourced airbags. This expected action follows a phased rollout planned with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, now providing owners with a permanent fix.

The recall includes certain 2003-2008 and 2009-2012 Mazda6 sedans, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 sedans, 2004-2005 MPV minivans, 2007-2012 CX-7 and CX-9 SUVs, and 2004 RX-8 sports cars.

Through several recalls of these models, Mazda replaced the Takata airbags that had the potential to launch shrapnel on deployment. Those replacement airbags didn't have the moisture-preventing desiccant that inflators would need for them to be effective over the years.

This announcement is for two specific recalls, as enumerated below. Owners are encouraged to follow through with these recalls, even if they had the airbags replaced previously.

Mazda will send recall notifications to owners by mail. But as with older cars such as these, it's possible that the automaker may not have every owner's correct address. If in doubt, contact Mazda or your local dealership to see if your specific car needs this work done.

The recall is scheduled to begin Dec. 18, 2019.

The Details

Vehicles recalled: Mazda is recalling 116,932 vehicles, certain 2003-2008 and 2009-2012 Mazda6 sedans, 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed6 sedans, 2004-2005 MPV minivans, 2007-2012 CX-7 and CX-9 SUVs, and 2004 RX-8 sports cars.

The problem: The passenger front airbags from Takata were previously replaced with airbags as an interim fix, because the original Takata airbag could propel sharp metal fragments on deployment, potentially striking the driver or other occupants and resulting in serious injury or death. New airbags with the proper desiccant to avoid such problems are now available for a permanent repair.

The fix: The dealership will replace the airbag inflator with an improved part at no charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: The Mazda numbers for these recalls are 2618F and 1317F. These recalls supersede previous recalls 13V130, 14V362, 14V773, 15V869, 16V356 and 17V012. Owners may call Mazda customer service at 800-222-5500, option 4. There's no date for when the recall will begin.

NHTSA campaign number: 19V781000 and 19V782000.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has a recall that needs to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
