The TL is a nice upscale sedan but no longer stood out from the crowd. Styling was slightly tweaked and the automatic transmission is a six-speed, boosting fuel economy by one mpg to 24. As always, it had a great drivetrain, sound ride, and a nicely-finished interior with supportive front seats. Handling was sound, but compromised by vague steering.

CR's Highway Mileage CR's Highway Mileage Measured fuel usage on a prescribed highway cruising.
Annual Fuel Cost Annual Fuel Cost The cost and amount of fuel used in 12,000 miles and is calculated from CR's overall mileage.
Greenhouse Gas Greenhouse Gas The Greenhouse Gas Rating represents the amount of carbon dioxide the vehicle emits compared to other vehicles of the same model year. This score from the EPA ranges from 1 (worst) to 10 (best).

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

The TL is a nice upscale sedan but no longer stood out from the crowd. Styling was slightly tweaked and the automatic transmission is a six-speed, boosting fuel economy by one mpg to 24. As always, it had a great drivetrain, sound ride, and a nicely-finished interior with supportive front seats. Handling was sound, but compromised by vague steering. A tight rear seat and a tiny trunk opening were letdowns in this typically commodious class. The TL was discontinued after the 2014 model year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 Acura TL owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen freezes up

"I provided a video of the freeze up to the dealership and the whole in dash unit was changed. That cured it"

Gilles L., QC (2014 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Extremely inaccurate. Very difficult to set destination. Almost impossible to set while driving. Often doesn't know where I am. Voice control is very poor. Traffic application not in tune with reality. Overall, it is useless. I use google maps"

Michael C., MA (2014 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Difficult to figure out how to pair. Google maps voice disappears when I am paired"

Michael C., MA (2014 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7-L V6)

"Contact list of my iphone periodically disappears. Sometimes it comes back and sometimes I need to re-enter the phone. In regard to "other", the dash screen at times reads that the key fob needs a new battery, even though both fob batteries have been changed"

Anonymous, MD (2014 Acura TL Base 3.5-L V6)
Radio

"The reception on FM stations is not very good, my previous 2009 model was much better"

Robert R., NH (2014 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.5-L V6)

"On very hot sunny days, the radio interface would freeze up in the current mode. Could not change station on XM or select another source. Sound quality of the audio system is muffled like from a low quality mp3 source. I owned an identical 2010 car before that one and the audio quality is degraded in comparison. Dealer cannot figure the problem. freezing was cured by changing the whole audio unit, but not the sound quality."

Gilles L., QC (2014 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7-L V6)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose interior trim or moldings

"One of the plastic seat molds broke when it popped loose after someone sat in the passengers seat."

Anonymous, IL (2014 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7-L V6)

"Passenger seat base is coming apart"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7-L V6)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint has chipped down to the metal. Acura says it's not their problem"

Anonymous, DC (2014 Acura TL Base)

"The paint finish is not durable, after it was only six months old it had chips in several parts. The clear coat is not durable like our other cars"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Acura TL)

"Something dripped on the car in a parking garage. now the paint appears to have peeled off in one small spot."

Gregory R., MN (2014 Acura TL SH-AWD 3.7-L V6)

Anonymous, CA (2014 Acura TL Base 3.5-L V6)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Tire pressure monitor

"The tire pressure monitor is causing the tires to slowly lose air in 3 of the tires. We have to travel to a larger dealer out of town to get it fixed. Also I cannot take this car through a car wash with under spray wash because it causes an electrical panel on the outside passenger compartment to get wet and shorts out all of electrical components. The power steering goes out, the wipers go on etc"

Anonymous, (2014 Acura TL Base 3.7-L V6)
Wiper motor or washer

"The intermittent wiper no longer goes the full range of speeds but only about 1/2 the range"

David T., NC (2014 Acura TL 3.7-L V6)
