Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Road Test

Simply put, the A6 is a joy for both driver and passengers alike. Its potent supercharged V6 engine and slick eight-speed transmission deliver invigorating and effortless power. Available permanent Quattro all-wheel-drive assures traction and contributes to wintertime security. And yet at 22 mpg, fuel economy is quite commendable. But that's just the beginning.

The A6 outperforms many of its peers because it is so multi-talented. It provides an uplifting driving experience thanks to its responsive steering and tied-down suspension. But it also rides smoothly, leaving the bumps and ruts of the road outside the solid, vault-like cabin. The interior is quiet, instilling a feeling of a safe-haven. Inside the A6 is sumptuous and accommodating, with super comfortable and supportive seats keeping you fresh and ache-free. The trunk is large and beautifully finished. Interior quality and ambience is top notch, although it's more businesslike than glitzy.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Audi A6 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"rust"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Audi A6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Normal routine brake wear

"it seemed the dealer screwed me when I brought the car in for the last of my prepaid service intervals. They realized I was probably going to stop using them and i had to replace all brake components for all 4 wheels to the tune of $2,000+"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Audi A6 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Brake warning light came on.Replaced rear pads and rotors"

Joanne B., VT (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
Premature brake wear

"Brakes were grinding and throbbing from the time of delivery. Dealer attributed this to "Audi's big brakes." At 15000 miles the front brakes had to be replaced. Initially, the dealer attributed this to normal wear but then agreed to waive the cost of replacement. The replacement brakes are fine"

Marshall W., VA (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"I had to replace both front brakes at 12000 miles which seems excessive to me and after 27000 they want me to replace the rear"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Rear Caliper seized. Rotor required replacement."

Anonymous, (2016 Audi A6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"I bought the vehicle in May 2019. Three months later the rotors had warped and needed to be replaced. This was my second A6 so i know who to use the brakes, my last A6 went nearly 60k miles before I needed rotors replaced. After much arguing, the dealership agreed to replace the rotors on their dime (otherwise what does certified pre-owned mean?). Less than three months after the replacement, the rotors began vibrating again and will need to be replaced soon. Something is fundamentally wrong with the system"

Anonymous, (2016 Audi A6 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Front brake pads needed to be replaced at about 19000 miles. Dealer replaced brake pads at no cost."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The Audi brakes do not last. I have had issue with the brakes grinding and shaking the car. Have replaced the brakes twice already and only have 50,000 mile on the car."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Pulsation or vibration

"warped rotors. Audi did not offer to fix. Happens all the time when slowing from higher speeds"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Audi A6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"car devolped harsh pulsation soon after purchase. I had a number of complaint all of which was fixed promptly under certified warranty."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Audi A6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"2nd time brake rotors were replaced in 25000 miles."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Audi A6 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Uneven wear of the rotors, which had to be replaced to solve the problem"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Audi A6 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Brake rotors were turned about 36 months ago for the same pulsating problem. Now need to have it done again. Seems to be a recurring problem with the 2016 Audi A6. The service Tech did not disagree with me when I sted so."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Best sedan on the market bar none...I just have issues with pulsation and warped rotors. Three different times before 20K miles. The dealer keeps repairing them under warranty, but it doesn't take long for the issue to come back. I do not have many hills and I do not ride my brakes, and I even drop the trans into sport mode to slow down the car. People on line say its the electronic parking brake, which is activated as soon as you get out of your car when it's running (getting mail) pushing on the rotors? But, it happened on front also..."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Vehicle was a stop sale Turbo Diesel A6 and due to 'Lot Rot the brakes became rusted and pitted"

Gregory P., CA (2016 Audi A6)
Rotors

"At 10,000 miles the rotors failed and had to be replaced. Audi service said that it was because I had used the Adaptive Cruise Control in the mountains, and that the Adaptive Cruise Control had put too much wear on the brakes. I live in the mountains, and the Adaptive Cruise Control was the primary reason for having chosen Audi over other brands. At first Audi Service advised me not to use the feature in the mountains, and then they relented and said to try using the manual transmission control"

James W., CO (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"This was the second time that the rotors warped under regular use. The first was at 15,000 miles. Both times were covered by Audi. This last time the rotors were on back order so took a month before a repair was made. Car was operational but braking was impacted by warped feedback."

Anonymous, IL (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Front rotors warped and had to be replaced."

Andrew O., CA (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The A6 was in the shop for warped rotors 3 times for the first 16,000 miles. The car was returned to Audi today for a soft brake pedal. It almost goes to the floor and will only come back after the second pump. I don't think they bled the brake line properly."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"warped front brake rotors -- started after only 12000 miles on the car. Design or manufacturing flaw. Common problem, and Audi definitely knows about it. Audi replaced mine for free but is not doing this for everyone (which I don't understand)."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"I am on my fourth set of rotors in 48k miles. Rotors seem to warp rapidly, especially if you commute involves rush hours highway driving. Apparently the rotors don't dissipate heat well enough and warp under stressful use. The dealer has replaced them but Audi USA does not accept this as a design flaw. It is. Recently replaced with nonAudi brakes that are Less expensive and heavier than the OEM. Perhaps the lighter weight contributes to the rotor heating problem. New brakes working well but only 1k miles so far...."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Rotors had to be replaced at 18000 miles and again about one year later. Very premature wearing"

Anonymous, KY (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Replacement 2nd time may be due to the dealership not replacing the pads the first time the rotors were replaced"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Audi A6 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"brakes pulsated going down hills etc., started with only 19000 miles on car. told roters needed replacing at cost of $800 and audi would not cover even though car was under warranty"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"At 28000 miles each of the 4 rotors test out of spec. I replaced all 4 for $1,500. The full warranty is in place but Audi said brakes are only covered for a year. Besides, the service rep said, most people only get 30,000 miles so your wear is normal. By the way, there was very little wear on the pads so the brakes were not used hard. Poor performance on the brakes and poor attitude on Audi saying 30k is normal and acceptable."

T W., CT (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"It appears the rotors are not large enough for the weight of this car. They wear rapidly and groove severely."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

Bernice S., NJ (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"The systems often does not connect to the smart phone in the car that has been previously paired. Manual connection is required."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"Responses to the exact same voice commands are inconsistent. Compared to Google and Siri, the system is very complex and not intuitive"

Marshall W., VA (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"The system is designed to allow one to send an address from a PC to the Directions mode of the navigation system. After years of trying, they have given up on fixing it."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"The navigation system almost always had a destination which did not relate to the one I put in. After many service calls it was never fixed. Terrible service."

Eugene H., NJ (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"The phone, Samsung Note 4 with Verizon will pair OK. When driving and talking, the car will loose the connection with the phone and the radio comes through the speakers. But the phone still has the caller active. I can't hear the caller because the phone thinks the Bluetooth is still connected. After 10-20 seconds, the voice comes back on the car speakers. The car call timer resets to zero, but the phone timer shows the total length of the call. My phone works fine in my MERCEDES-BENZ and my girlfriends Mercedes. The phone has the same problem with service loaners from Audi. I have had it in 3 times and they claim they can't find any problem. I can't count on it to make business calls."

Jeff P., IL (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, IL (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Volume stopped working and the speakers sound was bad. They had to replace the entire console."

Anthony A., CA (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"switch for on and off does not work most of the time . .but I have found a work around"

Anonymous, TN (2016 Audi A6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Steering wheel controls

"See prior answer."

Eugene H., NJ (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
Voice control commands

"Totally useless. Never works. Also, loads of other problems in car"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"When I leased the car the navigation system did not work. Dealer told me to bring in for a fix. They said no problem. Problem persisted till now. Never fixed. Phone system goes to navigation when tried by voice. They can’t fix it. Flashing lights to show car in blind spot doesn’t work. They can’t fix it. Radio shuts of in tunnel. Worst car I ever had."

Eugene H., NJ (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

Wind noise

"noise is louder then expected around windshild"

Anonymous, ME (2016 Audi A6 S6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Apparently there was a hole in the rubber sealing that seals steering rack from the firewall. It took over a year and ~7 visits for the dealership to figure this out, which happened after I threatened the dealership that I will file the car as a lemon, by then the factory rep visited to take a look"

"simply much more road noise than friends who have BMW or MB vehicles"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Audi A6 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"Too many upshifts at low speeds during acceleration, and they are poorly executed...stumble and surge. No fix available from Audi"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Sometime when leaving a stop sign or stop light, the car will learch forward real fast"

Jeff P., IL (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Shifts abruptly occasionally. Seems to be when going into 3rd gear. Dealer says they cant reproduce it"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"when car starts from full stop, car jerks roughly (for a luxury sedan) when shifting from 1st gear to 2nd gear. Taken to dealership, and was told nothing was wrong. Also, when it's very cold out (like 10 degrees) car makes metal-to-metal grinding noise when shifting from 1st to 2nd"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Felt abrupt when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse. Had the car in at the dealer this past week and they corrected the problem by resetting the adaptation part of the transmission software and the problem has been corrected."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Due to transmission problems. When accentuating from a stop, forward or reverse. Clunk and rough start."

Anonymous, SC (2016 Audi A6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Slipping transmission

"On a hill, when shifting to go uphill, the car will roll downhill one foot before the transmission engages. This does not happen with an A4 2.0 or an A6 3.0. Just the A6 2.0"

Jeff P., IL (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"If I park on an incline, parallel paring in a tight space, the car will roll down hill about one foot before the transmission engages. Start the car, foot on the brake, shift into gear, take my foot off the brake and the car will roll before the gear engages. The problem does not happen on an A4 with the 2L engine or on the A6 with the 3L engine.. Only on my A6 with the 2L engine."

Jeff P., IL (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Transmission leaks

"A small leak was discovered by the dealer during a state safety inspection. The dealer had to order a seal; when it came in, they installed, but tore the new seal. This happened once more before they ordered a new tool for the install. My car ended up at the shop for 8 days, while I waited for them to figure it out. All covered under warranty, and I was provided a loaner."

Eric S., NC (2016 Audi A6 S6)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Car was part of the diesel emissions recall for diesel engines."

Marty M., AZ (2016 Audi A6)

"purge valve (N80) and evap charcoal cannister needed to be replaced. Cannister was full of raw fuel. Previous owner had overfilled gas tank on numerous occasions. This led the vehicle to stall out after filling gas tank."

Michael L., TX (2016 Audi A6 S6)
Fuel injection system

"Started smelling gasoline when I turned off the engine about 2 years ago. Took the car into the local dealer and they said that nothing was wrong. In November, 2018, went in for an oil change and the dealer said that one of the fuel injection rails was loose and had to be repaired before I could drive it because it was dangerous. This was after I had been driving it for 2 years with the problem."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"I have a 3.0 turbo diesel (which was not one of your engine selections). I have been in the Audi diesel program. Since repair, O2 sensor gets corroded easily."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Audi A6 Unsure Unsure)

"Check engine light. Read error code. Fixed on warranty by local dealer."

Anonymous, (2016 Audi A6 S6)

"This car has a diesel engine that was part of the fiasco. The initial fix that was approved by the EPA caused diesel fumes to come into the cabin and I also had to have sensors replaced three times. Fortunately, there was a recall for this and the issues have resolved."

Anonymous, TN (2016 Audi A6 4.0-L V8 turbo)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"When set on "auto" the AC fails to engage when temp of interior of car exceeds set temp"

Sandra F., WA (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"HVAC temperature settings change themselves at ignition start, and fan doesn't take full advantage of its range to achieve set point quickly"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)

"Design flaw. The interior temp sensor is placed in direct sun. Park in sun on a cold day and the air conditioning comes on. It blows very cold air when you don't want it"

John R., GA (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Evaporator

"impossible to keep the car defrosted in rainy conditions unless the Emergency defrost feature is used; which is very noisy"

Anonymous, OR (2016 Audi A6 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
Heater system

"Very slow for heat to come on, and sometimes it never did. Had a repair done, which included a new pump and thermostat--very expensive. Still not adequate. Just took it back in and a line was replaced at no cost. We'll see if it works better."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Audi A6 2.0T 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Refrigerant leaks

"I would say it started in the last year and a half. My husband smelled it in our garage after driving. There was liquid on floor of garage. We took the A6 in twice before the Antifreeze leak was fixed properly."

Anonymous, OK (2016 Audi A6 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, FL (2016 Audi A6 3.0T 3.0-L V6 supercharged)
Electronic or air suspension

"the power steering partially failed on a road trip home and were able to get the car home to the garage. We tried to use it for a local trip before taking to the dealer and the steering stopped working. Car had to be towed to the dealer."

This resulted in check engine light going on and would not allow adding fuel (the pump would shut off after small amount added - it would take 10 to 15 minutes to add fuel). This also happened the previous winter and Audi had indicated the replacement should solve the problem which it did not. They did not repeat this claim with the repair this year so I expect I will have the same problem next winter."
