Audi A6

Redesigned for 2026, the A6 delivers a high-level driving experience, in part due to its smooth and punchy 362-hp, turbocharged V6. It's a quiet and comfortable highway cruiser, but it struggles to stand out among midsized luxury sedans, or even the smaller, less expensive A5. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and all-wheel drive are standard, but the DCT introduces some low-speed hesitation. Fuel economy is unimpressive, at 25 mpg overall. On the other hand, the A6 strikes a good balance between sharp handling and a comfortable ride. We found the front sports seats supportive, but the rear seat will prove tight for taller passengers. The user experience is marred by an overreliance on touchscreens and capacitive-touch controls that are frustrating to use while driving.

The redesigned Audi A6 features lots of new technology, including a new infotainment system. Most versions come with a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine; a 3.0-liter V6 engine with a mild hybrid system is also available. Both engines are paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which is short on refinement at low speeds and the car hesitates before launch or from a rolling stop. In our tests the four-cylinder returned a commendable 26 mpg overall. The Audi's agile handling gives it a sporty driving experience. The ride is taut with underlying firmness but still comfortable. The quiet cabin is a delight in terms of fit and finish and the seats are extremely comfortable and supportive. The dual screen infotainment system is daunting at first, but we found it ultimately logical. Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking are standard.

Updates for 2020 brought a new high-performance S6 with a 2.9-liter V6 turbocharged engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Allroad wagon returns and comes only with the 3.0-liter V6 turbo. For 2021 the Premium Plus got standard adaptive cruise control. There's also a new Sport 45 model, which includes a 13-hp boost compared to the standard four-cylinder engine (261 vs. 248). Finally, there's the RS 6 Avant wagon, powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 matched with an eight-speed transmission. 

A mild update for 2024 brings a new grille, enhanced connectivity features, and a slight power increase for the RS 6.

The 2012 redesign made the A6 even better, with an upgraded interior, comfortable seats, and a slick eight-speed automatic transmission. Rewarding for drivers and passengers alike. The sweet spot in the range is the Premium Plus trim, although it sacrifices ventilated front seats and a power-adjustable steering wheel, which are available only on Prestige trimmed cars. Unique high-tech features include Google Maps satellite view navigation and a built-in Wi-Fi hot spot. Most A6 buyers will select all-wheel-drive. Choosing between the supercharged V6 and the TDI diesel V6 is tough, as both deliver plenty of power with competitive fuel economy. The diesel was discontinued with the VW emissions troubles.

The A6 features a well-done interior, composed ride, and fairly agile handling. Sumptuous and comfortable, the passenger compartment shows lots of attention to detail. Luxury features are abundant in Audi’s mid-sized sedan, including a heated steering wheel, as well as heated front and rear seats. However, while the Audi is quiet and refined, its driving characteristics are not as engaging as some of its competitors. All-wheel drive (AWD) is a big plus, but exacts a penalty in fuel economy.
