Road Test

The BMW 3 Series is an excellent car that boasts high quality, attention to detail and a long list of high-tech features. It also still delivers a very satisfying and balanced overall driving experience.

Ride comfort, cabin quietness and interior fit and finish are all impressive. The rear seat has gained a little breathing room over the years, but it's still tight and some controls remain needlessly complicated.

"See previous comments. They (Herb Chambers) replaced the head unit because they believed it was faulty and that is why my new android phone would not pair to the car. I was skeptical as the car was fine before I tried to pair the phone. I was not happy with the cost but agreed to have the work done because the problem caused the head unit to constantly re-boot which disabled phone, radio, gps, cameras. Finally, they realized this did not fix the problem. After weeks of not having my car they old me it could not be fixed because my model phone (Google Fi) was the ONLY phone that would not work with the car. Ridiculous as we ended up fixing the pairing ourselves."

Fuel injection system

"Fuel injector #4 and fuel regulator valve had to be replaced following complete breakdown of vehicle. Vehicle stopped suddenly on a busy highway in dim morning light and could not be restarted or moved for 10 minutes or so. Finally I was able to start the vehicle and get it off the road. It was then towed to the nearest BMW dealership about 18 miles away. The 50K mile warranty had expired (breakdown occurred at 53K miles); however, BMW agreed to pay 90% of the $1800 repair cost. This was a very dangerous/unsafe situation and as a result I have lost confidence in the reliability of the vehicle going forward. Therefore, I am considering replacing the vehicle with a more reliable make (e.g., Toyota or Honda)."

"The high pressure diesel fuel pump came apart as described by the dealer, causing my car to immediately stall and have to be flat-bed towed in for service. Since the fuel pump shredded metal into the fuel system, the pump, all fuel lines, the fuel tank, the injectors, filters, etc. all had to be replaced. The repairs took two weeks and the dealer confessed that book rate this would have cost around $13000. I did receive a manufacturer's extended warranty on the new fuel pump, so BMW did admit that there was a design flaw with the old pump. I must say that the repairs were covered by warranty 100% and a beautiful loaner car was given to me for the down time."

It didn't have directional stability and we had to constantly correct. at 30,000 miles the tires wore out and we purchased new tires and had the car aligned again at the dealer. "Left rear started with squeaking noise that I took to two shops that sprayed lub on the bushings and sent me on my way. Sound started again very soon. Found a third shop that replaced ball joint and bushing and fixed it. About 4000 miles later the same sounds started on the right rear and I took it to the same shop and had the same work done - all fixed now"

Shocks or struts

"At 55k miles, shocks/struts leaked and caused suspension to fail. Timed by BMW to occur after original warranty expires and pre-owned warranty specifically excludes suspension. During warranty period, struts made clunking noises and I asked dealer to replace; they refused, and independent repair shop discovered leaking/failing struts after warranty expired. Causes ride to become extremely hard and nearly unbearable. At 57k miles, it's a $3000-4000 repair cost, which seems excessive for this few miles. Not a great deal, although acquisition cost of the car was low ($24k with 34k miles) so this built-in failure by BMW was not unexpected or unreasonable. Still, seems low-class of a company like BMW to engineer in a known failure -- and they know it because they specifically exclude any suspension items from pre-owned warranty, the period when the suspension is designed to fail."

"I have purchased extended warranty and maintenance from BMW USA. After 50,000 miles, the shocks have become less absorbing and bottom out easily. BMW dealers stat its all good and normal wear and tear. If I didnt had full extended warranty and maintenance, I am sure they would have said its bad and needs replacement"

"water pump failed at approx. 60000 miles. The pump would operate and then the car would unpredictably go into safety mode, slowing the car down on the highway or anywhere we drove. You would then need to pull over and turn off the car and restart it and could drive again (variable amount) before it happened again. Very expensive problem to fix on this car."

"BMW has a repair campaign going on for their 4-cylinder turbo engines, the N20 and N26 models. The root issue is disintegrating timing chain guides which, if left unrepaired, will destroy the engine. The problem will manifest itself as a whirring noise in the engine compartment which will very slowly grow over time. In my case I noticed the whirring noise and a very occasional stumbling at idle. Other than that the car drove normally. After a week or so of diagnosing, some attempted repairs, and a visit from a BMW engineer, BMW decided to do a short block replacement entirely at their cost."
