Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"The 2.0 turbo delivers great acceleration. However, throttle response can be abrupt when going from completely off throttle. Handling is great, as expected from a BMW 3 series."

"Very nice feel to steering."

Anonymous, WA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"It accelerates and handles better than my X1 did and previous sedan that was 2008"

Anonymous, TX (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"For a diesel, the acceleration is very good and the xDrive transfers torque between the front and rear axles so that handling is superb in corners and in slippery road conditions."

J S., ID (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"In line six is a great engine. Silky smooth acceleration. BMW warranty change is cheap out, but car drives beautifully!"

Anonymous, IL (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Good acceleration, comfortable to drive,"

Anonymous, OR (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"For a four cylinder, it’s excellent."

"The manual transmission is excellent, contributing to a great driving experience. Acceleration is strong and it holds the road very well."

Richard S., MA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

Steve P., CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Great balance between comfort and handling."

Cary S., CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"I have had a BMW most of my adult life. Ive had the 3 series and the 5. I love them both. But the 3 series is just fun. Response time is great. Acceleration is right on the money. It looks sharp. The interior is luxurious. I can have a classy car plus have great mileage."

Anonymous, GA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Good"

Louise C., CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Outstanding combination of acceleration and handling with very good fuel economy. Exhilarating to drive. Can't wait to go somewhere when we take it out."

Anonymous, NM (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Acceleration. Very quiet drive. Control buttons a bit akwardly placed i.e. door lock is above screen on dashboard, trunk button well below steering column and hard to reach,"

Anonymous, FL (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"This is an elegant"muscle car". Acceleration is off the charts and handling is outstanding. I love driving this car."

Anonymous, TX (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The 320i model @ 180 seems to have among the lowest horsepower compared to other similar cars but our feeling is it performs as good as any other similar car we have driven."

Randy M., SK (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Sluggish initial acceleration Light steering without dynamic feedback"

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Excellent handling and acceleration. Steering is superb and on par with my 2011 3 series which I consider best in class"

Paul K., MI (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Rapid acceleration, smooth, very responsive. Handling very typical for a BMW: excellent"

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"It truly is the Ultimate Driving Machine. Puts a grin on my face."

Anonymous, MI (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The BMW accelerates quickly and smoothly, no hesitation. The car takes turns very well. So far, the car has been super."

Anonymous, MD (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"It is a PHEV and I am very happy with both the mileage and the acceleration."

Michael A., AZ (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Love the acceleration adn responsiveness thats why I traded my 2013 X1 in for BMW 330"

Anonymous, TX (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"It’s very responsive. The sport mode has nice tight steering and very good acceleration. I still smile every time I get in the car, even more than a year after I bought it"

Morgan F., PA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Excellent"

Anonymous, WV (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Acceleration is fine in default Comfort mode, and ramps up in Sport mode. The rear-wheel drive bias allows you to accelerate sooner when coming out of corners, which always puts a smile on my face and my sport wagon leaves the SUV's in the dust."

Daniel K., CT (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Tremendous acceleration; excellent, sporty handling"

Anonymous, MD (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Great driving car!"

Anonymous, FL (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The vehicle handles beautifully in through curves and has plenty of zip given that it is a 4 cylinder with solid gas mileage. Beautiful small sedan for mountain driving."

Anonymous, NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The turbocharged engine is powerful and has a wide torque band. However, at low speeds in comfort mode, such as exiting a slow corner, there is throttle lag followed by abrupt acceleration. Sport mode eliminates this by keeping the rpm's higher and selecting a lower gear when off throttle. The handling is great, to be expected from BMW."

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Excellent acceleration and handling - never any issues handling this car on the road."

Brian C., OH (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"This car has a beautiful design, high performance engine, good acceleration and great handling. The back up camera is not as good as other cars ( Acura, Mercedes Benz and Lexus) The seats are not as comfortable as her competition."

Anonymous, NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Handling is excellent. It’s what anyone would expect from a BMW. There is still some turbo lag. Sometimes i think going to a supercharger instead of turbo would be better."

Anonymous, VA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Great acceleration but the suspension is a tad soft in sport mode."

Eric M., CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"drives great and handles great. good gas mileage, looks good. pricing is an issue. over price, options"

Anonymous, NJ (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Very good handling and drivablility"

Anonymous, IN (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Nev system is easy to learn and use."

Anonymous, MI (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"It is fun to drive as it picks up quickly. You can send the addresses directly to your idrive system for navigation"

Shamim K., DC (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"handles well, acceleration, fun to drive, comfortable seats, reliable, good dealer services, great infotainment-voice controls."

Randy M., ON (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Excellent acceleration, excellent handling, fun to drive, much improved from my 2014 bmw"

Anonymous, NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Incredibly fast, smooth, and it gets great mileage. Fun to drive."

Anonymous, OH (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Best car on the road for the price"

Robert T., MN (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Great acceleration. Driving modes make a big difference (ECO Pro, Comfort, Sport, Sport+). Very sure-footed, but driving a rear wheel drive car can take some getting used to (especially in the rain)."

Clifford F., FL (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"We've owned several BMWs previously and this is the cushiest among them, but clearly is bending the brand toward comfort and away from the Ultimate Performance Machine."

Mike F., AZ (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Superior cornering and handling. Accelerator pedal has to be slowly pressed otherwise car goes to 3000-4000 rpm"

Robert R., NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"steering / handling not up to old BMW standards, electric steering doesn't communicate well and handling not very precise"

Anonymous, MI (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Holds the road very well. Feel very safe driving this car."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Handles the road like nothing I've ever driven before. Amazing."

Peter D., NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"All in all it handles very well, but not as well as previous BMWs. Going from hydraulic power steering to electric power steering took away some of the road feel"

Anonymous, DE (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Powerful, torquey engine with a well tuned transmission that does a good job of staying in the correct gear. Handling is good although road feel is not as good as in older BMWs."

Richard B., CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Great acceleration even at high altitudes or driving in the mountains. Handles like a smaller sports car, without being harsh or punishing"

Don H., NV (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"ride, handling, acceleration, comfort"

Anonymous, ON (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Great handling and incredible acceleration"

Joel S., IL (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Perfect. Powerful. Effortless power and control."

Patrick G., VA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The seats are comfortable. The suspension exemplifies what I love about German cars -- firm without being giggly, and very well-controlled. However, it quickly developed squeaks around the back windows. I have just over 1,000 miles on it, haven't even been through winter potholes yet!"

Anonymous, NH (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Again, can drive all day and not feel tired"

Anonymous, WA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"adjustable comfort of the seats"

Anonymous, NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The ride is smooth and quiet like a luxury car, but it still delivers road feel and a sense of precise steering. Driving position is excellent and the seats have good bolsters."

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The sport seats are the most comfortable driver's seat I have ever experienced in a car. I'm slim. so having adjustable sides to the seats means I can crank them in to fit snugly--very nice when driving mountain roads! The ride is also a very good balance between comfort and agility."

Anonymous, VA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Unacceptable cabin noises requiring multiple trips to dealer to fix"

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Very comfortable and quiet."

Anonymous, NJ (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The BMW drives and rides great! The seats are very comfortable and the ride is quiet."

Anonymous, MD (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"I like the wrap around but the seats themselves are not that comfortable."

Eric M., CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"the BMW is nothing special for its price; seats, noise, and ride are no better than our Golf TSI S"

Gregg F., NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Rides like a dream. The bucket seats are a bit snug, but overall the comfort is excellent. Handles great!"

Brian C., OH (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"It rides like a bucboard with no springs. Both my wife and I get very sore backs on drives of 50 miles or more. I have driven much cheaper rental cars that are far more comfortable. If I had known this in the beginning I would have never bought this car. I am very dissatisfied."

Mac R., VA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"road noise from the rear wheels can be intrusive on older pavements"

Les F., FL (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The GT is very spacious. The back seats are as spacious as the BMW740, leg room, head room shoulder room are huge. The trunk with the hatch back is very large. Front seat head room is super - and I am 6'6" tall. I love this interior space, quietness, and huge greenhouse windows.. Fabulous!!"

Steve P., CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Outstanding quiet smooth ride."

Anonymous, NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"There is no lumbar adjustment in the driver’s seat. Very poor design. Lumbar support is much more important than having the sides curve in around you."

Kenneth K., NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"I like the seats but my wife complains that they are not comfortable on long drives mostly because of the fixed position headrest"

Edwin L., NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Ride noise is relatively quiet. The suspension is on the firm side, but handles bumps very well. The seats have multiple adjustments, although the highest seating position is rather low. The leather is of high quality. It rides like a true luxury car."

Daniel K., CT (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The sport seats are extremely comfortable and have many adjustments. The ride is too noisy and too busy. The suspension is not composed over irregular roads. The run flat tires on this car are too hard, too loud, too expensive, and don't last long. Refinement is lacking for a car at this price point."

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"The lease deal I got was amazing, $350 per month with zero drive off for 36 month 15k miles per year."

Anne M., FL (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"It should have automatic braking as a collision avoidance feature for this price."

Anonymous, NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"We traded in a Chevy SS for the 340i xdrive .. considering it's sticker is $25,000 more I just expected more features.. like auto start.. auto locks.. even cup holders.. or cooled seats.. the Chevy had all above.. but the BMW DEFINITELY drives nicer.. we only use it for our 3000 mile road trips a few times a year and it's so comfortable for those long drives compared to the old car that we decided to keep it. I won't buy another though"

Sean L., WA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The 330i is a nice car, but very expensive. Common options really drive the price up quickly. The problem is the way BMW cuts costs on things that catch you by surprise: the windows aren't tinted and the AC system is weak, making it difficult to get comfortable in hot, sunny weather; the seat belts are not height-adjustable; there are no door lock/unlock switches on the doors; the 12V ports have cheap caps on them instead of hinged doors. Over time, these things erode the experience of owning what should be a luxury car. The ride is actually very ordinary--something I didn't expect from the "Ultimate Driving Machine.""

Anonymous, CA (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"The car is peppy with 248 hp and at the same time on the highway can deliver economy in the high 30's to the low 40's."

Les F., FL (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"This is our second BMW in 5 years and we still own the first one. We took advantage of BMW prior year discounted pricing on both 320i models we own. Price paid is at the high side but very comparable to heavily optioned cars in the same category. But the German engineering to our experience seems to provide a better ride and handling."

Randy M., SK (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"Exceptionally well built car with no rattles. Handles like a smaller sports car. The engine purrs like kitten until you get in it and the the twin turbos really bring this thing to life. AWD it is great for going skiing or in inclement weather. With the seats folded down has the room of a small SUV"

Don H., NV (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"very good service and warranty"

Robert T., MN (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"It is a well performing but unfortunately overpriced vehicle."

Dominick C., NY (2017 BMW 3 Series)

"I got an amazing bargain in buying this new demo model, added to BMW owners' incentives and end of model year incentives!"

Gilbert F., IL (2017 BMW 3 Series)
