2011 BMW 5 Series Reliability - Consumer Reports
There's a reason so many people aspire to own a BMW 5 Series, and this car won't disappoint. Handling is taut and agile, though the sedan has evolved to focus on luxury and refinement rather than overtly sporty driving. Its steering has lost some of the feel we've come to associate with previous 5 Series. The ride is comfortable and steady and the cabin is quiet.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"I have a check engine light coming on. This has been happening since I purchased the car with 32,000 miles on it. BMW claimed to have unstuck an valve in the emission control system and charged me $150 as it was not covered by the warranty. A few months later the light came on again showing the same problem. As much as it bothers me to have the check engine light I was not in a hurry to pay the dealer again for unsticking a valve. A few months later my check engine light went our (problem cleared). Since then the same problem has appeared and disappeared over and over again. I will worry about a permanent solution when it comes time to get an emissions inspection and my check engine light is on. So far, I have avoided that happening."
