2013 BMW 5 Series Reliability - Consumer Reports
There's a reason so many people aspire to own a BMW 5 Series, and this car won't disappoint. Handling is taut and agile, though the sedan has evolved to focus on luxury and refinement rather than overtly sporty driving. Its steering has lost some of the feel we've come to associate with previous 5 Series. The ride is comfortable and steady and the cabin is quiet.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 BMW 5 Series owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Multipule failures of the tire inflation level sensors"

Joel N., FL (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"I've had the car in at least 3 times in the 4 years that I've owned it for warning messages about the side view camera. Whenever they've fixed it, the camera works again for a few months and then fails again. Not huge deal since I don't use the side view camera really, just annoying that they can't really seem to fix it"

Anonymous, PA (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i xDrive 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"One of the sensors is out for the distance control. The dealer as well as private shops want a fortune to hook up the computer to diagnose which one it is. Then I was told the minimum to replace the sensor is over $400."

Anonymous, NJ (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"multiple malfunctions with the lane change sensors and back up warning sensors"

Ronald T., OR (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Sensors totally failed"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"About 5 times this happened. However iphone got new software and then it stopped. Dealer said they could not find a fault in system"

Anonymous, PA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Main control module went out, which causes all functions, i.e., navigation, radio, back-up camera to not work. Dealer provided loaner, replaced control module, reprogrammed module, in a two day repair. All has worked well since"

Kenneth W., HI (2013 BMW 5 Series M5 4.4-L V8 turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Does not consistently show playlists as they appear on the iPhone"

Anonymous, IN (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i xDrive 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"When attached via USB, car does not recognize Pandora from iPhone, but can via bluetooth. iPhone 6 was difficult to pair for music or phone use, while iPhones 5 and 4s were easy"

James M., CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"System update could not be achieved, Dealer kept vehicle for a week to determine major CPU failng"

Anonymous, CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"After entering a correct address as my final destination the GPS sent me to a totally different place. This happened several times"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"The GPS acts strangely sometimes. Tells you to make a U-Turn while on the Interstate, for no reason. Finds addresses and yet sends you elsewhere, in the wrong area. Just buggy sometimes. I don't trust it. We use a Garmin as the primary GPS"

John K., NC (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Sometimes have connection problems where will not recognize bluetooth. Constantly having issues with phone audio going to the car"

Anonymous, CT (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"car does not understand any rich text formatting in contacts or messaging so it does not synchronize any of this information correctly"

Noreen W., ON (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"radio quits working. Then starts again sometimes shortly, sometimes the next day"

Robert I., CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Radio Presets disappeared in 2 waves over a few days, requiring some sort of restart to recover. Entire system goes dark and resets occasionally (2 times in 2 years). While neither is problematic for driving, both undermine confidence in the auto"

James M., CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Voice control commands

"Never gets it right. Calls the wrong people, I have to repeat the command over and over"

Anonymous, NJ (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, IL (2013 BMW 5 Series 535d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)
Headlights

"Moisture got into the headlight assembly. In freezing weather it caused all sorts of error messages and malfunctions of the headlights and turn signals. Having repaired was over $2000... for moisture in the headlight!"

Anonymous, MO (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"headlight error warning light came on. dealer replaced the assembly under warranty"

Anonymous, CT (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Water got into the headlight assembly. Freezing caused it to create problems with the adaptive controls, and cause the turn signals to malfunction. Fixing it required removal and replacement of the entire assembly."

Anonymous, (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Passenger heated seats failed"

Anonymous, WA (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i xDrive 4.4-L V8 turbo)

Anonymous, WA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Keyless entry

"Sometimes, from the inside, one could not open the passenger door. The door would remain locked after car had been placed in park and car turned off. Problem was fixed under warranty"

Don K., CO (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Effective Fall 2019, keyless entry failed to work properly. First incident, driver door did not lock/unlock and I had to use manual key. Fix: Fuses replaced. In July 2020, rear passenger door not responding to keyless entry. I have to manually open & lock door from inside."

Anonymous, (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The locks are sluggish with the remote and hard to open from the inside of the car. We replaced an actuator and may have to do so for more locks. Annoying problem but doesn't compromise the safety of the car."

Anonymous, (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"could not open door with key by touching the door handle with key in hand"

Anonymous, FL (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, FL (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Not sure if it was the compressor or condenser, but both the A/C as well as the heater stopped working, completely, at different times; the A/C stopped during a heat wave in September, and the heater stopped working, also completely during the winter."

Carol S., MA (2013 BMW 5 Series)
Automatic climate control

"The system is not consistent and sometimes unsuffcient"

Anonymous, QC (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"The air conditioning doesn't always turn off. The light on the button does, but it continues to produce cold air for hours. Or even the next morning when you start it up again"

Dan M., CO (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"The system will not keep the car at the temperature setting. It gets hotter and hotter, and the only way to cool the compartment is to manuall choose Max Air. When Max Air is running, you can't hear your passengers, your radio or your phone"

Anonymous, OH (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Blower (fan) motor

"fan speed would rise to maximum speed, then slowly fall to off. After a couple of minutes, fan would come back on, after 30 seconds or so, slowly fall to shutting off. It was fixed about 8 months ago, but is starting to do it again. I will have to live with it for a few months until it does it consistently, then I can take it in and leave the car at the dealer for 2 weeks so they can fix it"

Alex A., FL (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"When I bought the car it was 3 years old with only 15K miles on it. The blower motor failed for unknown reasons and was not covered by any warranty. It was an expensive repair. I wasn't happy."

Roy S., FL (2013 BMW 5 Series Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl hybrid)

"Fan refused to function intermittently, meaning no warm air was directed into the cabin or onto the windshield in cold weather. Diagnosed by BMW technicians as total failure needing complete replacement of the fan unit, at a cost of $4,000."

Anonymous, OH (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Calipers

"Front caliper was warped thereby causing the vibration. Fixed under extended warranty."

Anonymous, CO (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Normal routine brake wear

"It was due"

Anonymous, VA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"At 104,000 miles we had front brakes replaced, including new rotors, because there was a vibration (rotors) when you stepped on the brakes. The front brakes had never been replaced. So, we were extremely happy that we got that many miles out of the brakes (my commute work was a lot of highway miles making them last longer)."

Anonymous, (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Premature brake wear

"Car would vibrate and shake when stopping. Dealer tried to tell me this was natural. Finally had to replace brakes and rotors which corrected problem"

Anonymous, CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Pulsation or vibration

"Brakes pulsate when stopping over 50 mph. At lower speed does not occur. Bmw couldn't checked and said brakes were OK"

"warped rotors"

Anonymous, (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Rotors were warped. Replaced under warrantee"

Anonymous, CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, OR (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i xDrive 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"Rotors warped. Dealer believed it to be caused by over heating rotor then too quickly cooled."

Anonymous, CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"See previous comments. Rotor replacement was due to normal wear and tear. No faulty car workmanship."

Anonymous, (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"One cylinder head replaced due to loose fuel injectors"

Anonymous, MA (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i xDrive 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"This engine family is notorious for having valve stem seals that leak. Replacing the seals addressed the problem and the oil consumption is now normal."

Anonymous, CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i 4.4-L V8 turbo)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"Excessive oil consumption necessitated replacement of valve stem seals and guides."

Anonymous, CA (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"The engine completely died and could not move car. Had it towed. Information we got in code is that if oil change isn't more frequent sometime metal chips get into engine and destroy it. Researched online and other people had similar problems. It had just past warranty so BMW gave us a deal and charged us $6000 for new engine instead of &18000 according to the BMW employee we dealt with. They tried to blame me for a past oil change delay by previous owner but it had been certified when we bought it so they gave us a discount."

Anonymous, (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i Unsure)

"The engine broke a rod bearing possibly due to an oil leak. The dealership was adamant about not replacing the engine despite the fact that the engine was not of such an age that it should have failed. When the problem occurred the vehicle was pretty much not drivable. It took about 3 weeks for BMW USA to authorize covering 60% of the repair which is simply too long. The problem was resolved by installing a rebuilt engine to replace the broken engine."

Anonymous, FL (2013 BMW 5 Series 550i 4.4-L V8 turbo)
Timing belt or chain

"At 59992 miles, complete engine stop due to failure of vtc eccentric shaft and servo motor. $4000 to repair. Was told this was typical wear as these parts usually require replacement after 50000 miles."

Anonymous, TX (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i Unsure)

Anonymous, TX (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Leak in oil valve cover caused oil to drop on exhaust and cause burnt oil smell. Separate oil leak at oil filter housing as well"

Anonymous, VA (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Slow oil leak not requiring immediate service but causes large cloud of blue smoke each time the engine starts after sitting overnight."

Anonymous, TX (2013 BMW 5 Series 528i Unsure)

"Valve cover and oil pump gaskets were leaking and were replaced at dealer (non-warranty repair)."

Anonymous, FL (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Valve cover gasket leaking oil on exhaust manifold after 100K miles. When stopping at a stoplight with the car idling, occasionally the vapors from the oil burning on the manifold would enter the cabin through the fresh air intake. I had the valve cover and gasket replaced at 104K miles."

Anonymous, NC (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"BMW issued an engine recall since some models are consuming excessive oil. Believe this is due to gasket leagkage"

Anonymous, NC (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Electrical failure

"I'm calling it electrical but the comfort access system is a problem and i think I need a new Footwell Module. I walk up to the car and it unlock without my touching the fob. Also, because this system is faulty i am getting a battery discharge warning light."

Anonymous, FL (2013 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"For months. I have had a check engine light showing on the dash even though the car's computer says there are no issues and everything is operating properly. Also, the car's clock now only advances when the ignition is switched on, i.e. if the clock says 11:19 when I park the car for the night, when I start it in the morning the clock will say 11:19 and begin keeping time from there.
