There's a reason so many people aspire to own a 5 Series, and this car mostly won't disappoint. Handling is taut and agile, though the car has evolved to focus on luxury and refinement rather than overtly sporty driving. Its steering has lost some of the feel we've come to associate with previous 5 Series. The ride is comfortable and steady and the cabin is quiet.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 BMW 5 Series owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Some hose that takes the urea fluid to the exhaust was leaking"

Anonymous, AB (2016 BMW 5 Series 535d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

"Diesel Fuel Emission system gave a warning about incompatibility but was replaced/repaired by the dealer. I had a new loaner throughout, no complaints at all :)"

Rahmi K., WA (2016 BMW 5 Series 535d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)
Fuel cap

"Was not able to open door to gas ; faulty sensor in gas tank which had to be replaced"

Anonymous, FL (2016 BMW 5 Series Hybrid 3.0-L 6 Cyl hybrid)
Fuel injection system

"Fuel Injectors were faulty and had to be replaced. Although they were covered under warranty, I have not seen fuel injectors go bad under 50,000 miles. Did not have any of these issues with our 2005 X5 with 239,000 miles."

Anonymous, VA (2016 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"The vehicle broke down while driving on the freeway. The check engine light turned on and the car went into limp mode. I tried to make it to the next exit, but the engine stalled and I pulled over onto the shoulder. The enginer could not be restarted. The vehicle was towed to the nearest dealership by BMW's roadside assistance at no cost. The delearship determined that fuel pump failure caused metal shards to spread throughout the fuel system. The fuel pump, fuel lines and fuel injection system were all replaced under the original warranty."

Anonymous, (2016 BMW 5 Series 535d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)
Fuel pump

Sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor)

"Repeated problems with the fuel sensors. Needed to take the car in for warranty service 3 times in 12 months"

Anonymous, TX (2016 BMW 5 Series 535i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Integrated sensor in fuel tank failed, requiring replacement of tank. This was covered by warranty but has occurred twice."

Anonymous, CA (2016 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The check engine light came on intermittently and the dealer found that there was a service bulletin on this problem and the sensors were replace under the warranty."

Anonymous, NM (2016 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Problem related to engine control of diesel pollution system."

Thomas F., PA (2016 BMW 5 Series 535d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

"Glove box latch rattles at certain engine frequency"

Anonymous, AR (2016 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Seats and plastic liners in map light component squeak heavily. Certainly it is from wear and tear, however the seat squeaking is the most concerning being only a 4-year old vehicle. Not sure if it is the leatherette vs leather upholstery, but for a vehicle priced at $54K originally, I expected better."

Anonymous, NY (2016 BMW 5 Series 528i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

Anonymous, IA (2016 BMW 5 Series 535d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
Summary:
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. What should you do:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
