BMW continues to focus on luxury, refinement, fuel efficiency and high tech for most of its models somewhat to the detriment of handling agility. Case in point: the redesigned 2017 5 Series is the most luxurious version ever of BMW's midsized sedan. The new car is essentially the same size as the outgoing model, but marginally lighter and roomier.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 BMW 5 Series owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Apple CarPlay

"it is not compatible with my apple phone"

Anonymous, MD (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"The nav system, satilites, distance control, radieo, and keyless enyrty were all inoperable"

Ed B., FL (2017 BMW 5 Series 540i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"The entire screen just blanks out and may or may not come on. We cannot determine the mileage, the navigation screen also goes out as well as the radio. The BMW technicians do not know what is going on so they kept saying the computer system was updating. If that was true then it picks the most awkward times to update like when we're on the road and it's always updating."

Anonymous, NY (2017 BMW 5 Series 540i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"TOTAL FAILURE"

Ed B., FL (2017 BMW 5 Series 540i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Bluetooth key fob disconnects a lot, then phone disconnects. Dealer response is to change battery in the key fob. Key fob battery is changed every 2 months. Basically the key fob range outside the car is three feet."

Anonymous, IL (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"phone quit paring. had to get BMW on the phone - first BMW then local dealer - had to disconnect from phone and car and then reconnect to get it to work again"

Anonymous, TX (2017 BMW 5 Series 540i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Software update fixes

"The software to the front seatbelt alarm was faulty and would randomly go off while driving, sounding the alarm for up to 30 minutes. Totally annoying and distracting. The software was updated at least twice, then the alarm was disconnected to remedy the problem. A couple of other times the automatic door locks began clicking on and off (locking and unlocking) while driving the car, but the first software update corrected this problem."

Anonymous, TX (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

"Temperature is difficult to regulate with the heat and with the air conditioning."

Anonymous, VA (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Automatic A/C Fan Speed during HOT WEATHER issue was corrected with a S/W update."

M K., NJ (2017 BMW 5 Series 540i xDrive 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Condenser

"The AC system began to have a moldy odor and the dealership had to drain, flush, and refill the system to get rid of a mold problem. Have had no other problems in the months since."

Anonymous, TX (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Heater system

"Car fairly often has problems heating up wherein the thermostat has to be set to 77 to feel heat, especially when driving at fast speeds on the highway. Sometimes it blows out cool air from the front vents."

Anonymous, VA (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Refrigerant leaks

"on 3 occasions AC would not cool It seems odd as in all my other cars I have never had AC problems"

Anonymous, VA (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i xDrive 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Twice in the last 12 months I've had to have the car serviced for coolant levels alerts. I was told there were no leaks, however, they had no answer for why the coolant seems to go low with the need to replace it."

Anonymous, NY (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

12V power plug

"half of the plugs don't work"

Anonymous, AZ (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Heated or cooled seats

"cooled seats didn't work and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, TX (2017 BMW 5 Series 540i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Keyless entry

"Had to take key fob out to start the vehicle many times. Unlocking failed half the time. Phone would disconnect. Dealer never resolved."

Anonymous, IL (2017 BMW 5 Series 530i 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The first problem that I've had with the Comfort Entry system is that from time to time the car will not unlock when I'm carrying the key fob and grab the door handle or the exterior trunk release. The car will unlock with the key fob remote buttons. Annoying on a $75,000 car. The 2nd, more problematic issues, is that one of the two key fobs is not recognized by the ignition system unless I hold the key against a specific area on the steering column. BMW states they are aware of the issue, but are working on a fix, and will not replace the key fob until they are able to fix the issue."

Anonymous, TX (2017 BMW 5 Series 540i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
