2022 Model Redesign Year
The i4 is a low-slung EV hatchback that is based on a modified 3 Series platform. It's quick and agile, and has an impeccably finished interior. The 536-hp AWD M50 we tested managed 318 miles in our 70-mph highway range test, far exceeding the EPA's estimate, and delivers thrilling, effortless acceleration. For 2026, the top trim was renamed the M60. It has 593 horsepower and BMW claims it can get up to 278 miles of range. Other versions of the i4 are rated for between 268 and 307 miles of range by BMW depending on trim and wheel size.
We were able to gain 65 miles of range in 15 minutes at public DC fast charging venues, thanks to the i4's competitive 205-kilowatt max acceptance rate. The ride is taut yet compliant, and the cabin is wonderfully silent. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, but rear-seat space is tight. BMW's latest infotainment system packs too many controls into the touchscreen, adding to driver distraction. Highway-speed AEB is optional.

The new BMW i4 with the 4 Series coupe styling, is a conventional-looking EV that heralds BMW's second phase of electrification. The i3 has been discontinued. There are three versions available. The eDrive40, with 335-hp and rear-wheel drive, is estimated to have a range of around 300 miles depending on wheel size. The all-wheel drive xDrive40 has 396 horsepower and is estimated to get between 268 and 287 miles of range for the 2026 model year. The top trim M50 with a maximum of 536-hp promises sports-car performance and 0-to-60-mph acceleration in under 4 seconds.
but a lower range of 245 miles. For 2026, this trim becomes the M60, gets 593 horsepower and a BMW-claimed range estimate of between 232 and 278 miles. With a high-power 200-kW DC charging available only in public venues, the i4 can gain up to 90 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
