Introduction
2027 BMW 7 Series and i7 Luxury Theater on Wheels
BMW’s revised flagship sedan has a streamlined exterior design while adding multiple layers of in-car displays and a new touchscreen-focused operating systemOverview
The 2027 BMW 7 Series and all-electric BMW i7 may have pared back their exterior styling, but the German automaker went wild on the inside. There are two layers of dashboard-spanning screens and eye-catching options that include a massive, 31.3-inch display for the rear passengers, a deeply reclining rear seat, and two-tone paint that contrasts matte and glossy finishes. Yet some of the biggest improvements are under all of that flashy skin, with the i7 getting new, more energy-dense battery cells to improve its driving range.
This hyperluxurious model range is the latest to use BMW’s new “Neue Klasse” design language and technology, which debuted with the iX3 and i3 electric vehicles. On the outside, BMW took inspiration from some of its classic models from the 1960s and 1970s for a more streamlined look, but under that less ostentatious exterior is a modern, touchscreen-focused operating system capable of taking over-the-air updates and adding new features over time.
BMW plans to offer this seventh-generation 7 Series with different powertrains for seemingly every type of high-end luxury buyer. It debuts with a choice of four models—two internal combustion and two electric for the i7—with plans to add a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in early 2027 and a sportier M Performance model later.
The rear-wheel-drive 2027 BMW 740 starts at $99,800, with the all-wheel-drive 740 xDrive starting at $102,800.
On the electric side, the i7 50 xDrive starts at $106,200, with the more powerful i7 60 xDrive starting at $124,700.
All four 7 Series models available at launch have a $1,550 destination fee and go on sale in the second half of 2026.
Pricing has yet to be announced for the BMW 750e xDrive PHEV, which goes on sale in early 2027, or the M Performance model, whose release date had not been announced at the time of publication.
It competes with the Audi A8, Genesis G90, Lucid Air, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Mercedes-Benz EQS, Porsche Panamera, and Porsche Taycan.
Powertrain choices are:
- 394-hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine; 8-speed automatic transmission; rear- or all-wheel drive
- 449-hp, dual electric motors; 112.5-kWh battery; all-wheel drive
- 536-hp, dual electric motors; 112.5-kWh battery; all-wheel drive
Price ranges are $99,800-$124,700. The on sale date is the second half of 2026.
The final assembly point is Dingolfing, Germany.
