If you still think of Buick as a brand that's only for octogenarians with a taste for whitewall tires and vinyl roof treatments, it's time for a reboot. The Regal is a thoroughly developed and satisfying midsized sports sedan that's more reminiscent of an Audi A4 than a softly sprung luxobarge. That European feel is no coincidence, since the Regal is based on a German design from General Motors' Opel division.

    Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Buick Regal owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

    In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

    What Owners Say

    Display screen freezes up

"Required a firmware upgrade performed by dealer at no cost"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Buick Regal Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Display screen goes blank

"The touch screen display for the Infotainment system starting going black intermittently in Nov 2019. Nothing would display when this happened including the splash screen when starting the car and the backup camera produced no image. Interestingly, the stereo still worked and the screen was responsive to touch even though you could not see any of the buttons being pushed. The screen would stay in this state for several days and then randomly start working again. Unfortunately, it was working correctly when I took it to the dealer and the dealer could not reproduce the issue. They did perform a software update for the infotainment system in the hope that might resolve the issue, but it did not. The problem came back a few weeks later. This time I made a video recording to demonstrate the problem for the dealer in case it started working when I took it in for the repair. Again, it was working when I took it in for the repair in early Jan 2020. The video was helpful to them since they could not reproduce it. They worked with the GM techs for a resolution. They found there was a software update for the HMI (Human Machine Interface--i.e. touchscreen) in the head unit. They updated the software and there has been no problem since (about four months now). This was fixed under the manufacturer warranty."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Buick Regal Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The problem was actually the radio. The dealer replaced the unit."

David K., CA (2016 Buick Regal Premium II 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Shortly after buying the Regal, the main screen would intermittently not come on. We never it had it serviced and it has not been an issue for a few months now"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Buick Regal Premium II 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Google maps caused my radio to change stations. when the google maps gave me a direction, ie: "turn at the next street" When the dealer thought it was a computer issue, they tried to update the computer,. Then my bluetooth no longer worked. I could not receive phone calls or texts with the car's system"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Buick Regal GS 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
    Voice control commands

"did not understand some, but not all, verbal commands but understood all numerical commands"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Buick Regal Premium II 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Did not respond to voice commands for music selection"

Henry G., FL (2016 Buick Regal Base 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

    Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

    What Owners Say

    Engine rebuild or replacement

"Car was a Hertz rental car with 42k Miles when purchased. At about 57k the car lost power, I pulled over and turned off engine. It wouldn't start. Taken to Cadillac/ Buick dealer. One cylinder had no compression. Later piston removed and one was cracked and had scored the cylinder wall. I was told that rental cars are often abused , driven hard etc. Car was in warranty and motor was replaced and everything seems to be like new. It's the best car that I have ever owned and pleased that engine was still in warranty!! The engine was using oil but seemed to be running well for about 6 months prior to the failure. The car was towed to dealership and was returned repaired in about two weeks. There was no charge."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Buick Regal Premium I 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

We were able to reset the key fob & restart the car using the key fob. I brought the car to the dealer the next day. The Key Fob required a new battery. The car also needed to have the car battery replaced under warranty."
