CR's Take
The big, bulky Escalade is based on the Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon platform and exhibits much better braking, handling, and ride characteristics than did the first-generation Escalade. Rear-drive models use GM's popular 295-hp, 5.3-liter V8, while all-wheel-drive versions get a 345-hp, 6.0-liter version. The interior is a dichotomy of luxurious plushness and cheap materials. A removable split third-row seat brings passenger capacity to eight. Second-row seats are standard buckets, with a bench available. The EXT is a plush version of the Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck. The longer ESV is based on the Suburban.
