Audi Recalls Cars and SUVs Due to Concerns About the Backup Camera

Volkswagen Group of America has issued a recall for 170,296 Audi cars and SUVs because the backup camera feed may not display when reversing. The safety action involves a long roster of models from the 2021 and 2022 model years, as detailed below.

    more on recalls

The problem is blamed on a software issue that can cause a blank screen to be displayed, rather than the video feed from the backup camera. As such, the involved vehicles fail to comply with the federal rear-visibility requirements. When the camera does not work as expected, there is a risk of a collision or striking a pedestrian.

Audi of America received 330 warranty claims, between January 2021 and September 2022, where the backup camera was not being displayed due to this issue.

Audi dealerships will update the software for the infotainment systems to correct the problem.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Dec. 2, 2022.

The problem: A blank or black screen may be displayed instead of the rearview camera feed when reversing.

The fix: Dealers will update the infotainment system software, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Audi’s customer service at 800-253-2834.

NHTSA campaign number: 22V742000. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 91DZ.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
