Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon Trucks Recalled for 'Phantom Braking'

The automaker says there have been four crashes in the U.S. and three injuries related to the problem with these pickups

General Motors is recalling over 57,000 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks from the 2023 model year because their automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems may activate unexpectedly and unintentionally, stopping or slowing the vehicle while in motion. This problem is commonly known as “phantom braking.”

    MORE ON RECALLS

The automaker says the problem has to do with improperly calibrated software that falsely detects an obstacle where there is none. If this happens while the vehicle is in motion, it could cause a crash.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, GM said it was aware of five crashes related to this recall (four in U.S., one in Canada). Three of the crashes involved minor injuries. The automaker also said it was aware of 234 owner complaints about the defect.

GM dealerships will perform a software update to fix the calibration of the front camera module (FCM) on affected vehicles. Last week the automaker ordered dealerships to stop selling the 2023 Colorado and Canyon trucks that were already on dealer lots until the problem could be fixed.

Colorado and Canyon Braking Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Chevrolet Colorado pickup trucks manufactured between Sep. 30, 2022, and Dec. 15, 2023.
    • GMC Canyon pickup trucks manufactured between Sep. 29, 2022, and Dec. 15, 2023.

The problem: Improperly calibrated front camera module (FCM) software could cause the vehicle’s AEB system to activate even if there isn’t an obstacle present. A crash could occur if this happens while the vehicle is in motion.

The fix: Chevrolet and GMC dealerships will update vehicle software free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call GMC at 800-462-8782 or Chevrolet at 800-222-1020.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V133. GM’s own number for this recall is A232424660.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall. NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
