Genesis G70, G80, and G90 Recalled for Fire Risk

It’s the latest recall involving vehicles from Hyundai catching fire

Genesis is recalling 2019-2022 G70 sedans, 2018-2020 G80 sedans, and 2017-2022 G90 sedans equipped with 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 engines because an oil leak may develop and cause a fire. 28,349 vehicles are included in the vehicle.

Earlier this month, Kia recalled some vehicles for the same issue with the same engine. Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis all share corporate ownership and use some of the same parts and designs. This is the latest in a series of fire-related recalls from these automakers. (Read “Why So Many Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis Vehicles Are Getting Recalled for Fire Risks.”)

    MORE ON Car RECALLS

Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that drivers may be warned of a developing problem by white smoke, an illuminated engine oil pressure warning light, and/or evidence of an oil leak. Some of these vehicles were already recalled in 2019, and owners of those vehicles will need to have this new recall fix completed.

The problem has to do with the left turbocharger oil feed pipe and hose assembly, which was manufactured from a material that could deteriorate and crack, leaking oil onto the hot exhaust manifold. If this happens, a fire could start while the vehicle is being driven.

To fix the problem, Genesis dealerships will replace the faulty oil feed pipe with a new part made out of stainless steel, free of charge.

The automaker says there have been no fires, crashes, or injuries related to this issue, but that there have been more than 80 warranty claims.

    Genesis G70, G80, and G90 Recall Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Genesis G70 sedans manufactured between May 2, 2018, and Sept. 1, 2021

    • Genesis G80 sedans manufactured between Jan. 16, 2017, and Jan. 17, 2020

    • Genesis G90 sedans manufactured between June 13, 2016, and Sept. 6, 2021

The problem: The left-side turbocharger oil supply pipe could crack and leak oil onto the hot exhaust manifold, which could cause a fire.

The fix: Genesis dealers will replace the oil supply pipe with a stainless steel version, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Hyundai at 855-371-9460.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V191. Hyundai’s own number for this recall is 019G. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 19V538 will need to have the new remedy completed.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
