Genesis Recalls Cars and SUVs to Fix Seat Belt Issue

In a crash, the seat belt pretensioners might explode and send metal fragments toward vehicle occupants

Genesis is recalling over 65,000 vehicles because their driver and passenger seat belt pretensioners may explode and cause injuries during a crash. The affected vehicles include the 2020 through 2023 GV80 SUV, 2021 through 2023 G80 sedan, 2022 and 2023 GV70 SUV, and 2023 GV60 EV.

A seat belt pretensioner is an important safety device that uses a controlled explosive charge to tighten the belt at the onset of a crash in order to prevent injury. However, on these recalled vehicles, the seat belt pretensioners could explode in a way that sends metal fragments toward the vehicle’s occupants.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker says that the problem is due to a design flaw. To fix the problem, Genesis dealerships will install a protective cap on the faulty pretensioners, free of charge.

Today’s recall comes after Hyundai, the parent company of Genesis, already recalled over 239,000 vehicles for a similar issue. Some Genesis vehicles were also recalled to fix seat belt pretensioners in 2021, and will need another repair. Although faulty seat belt pretensioners in Hyundai vehicles have caused injuries, Genesis tells NHTSA that there have been no crashes or injuries related to this problem in Genesis vehicles.

    The Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Genesis G80 sedans manufactured between July 25, 2020, and Jan. 25, 2023
    • Genesis GV60 EVs manufactured between Feb. 4, 2022, and Dec. 27, 2022
    • Genesis GV70 SUVs manufactured between March 10, 2021, and Jan. 11, 2023
    • Genesis GV80 SUVs manufactured between July 27, 2020, and Dec. 29, 2022

The problem: Over-pressurization of the pretensioner pipe may cause the pretensioner to deploy abnormally and spray metal fragments at the vehicle’s occupants, which could cause injury.

The fix: Dealerships will install a protective cap on the seat belt pretensioner to prevent abnormal deployment, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Genesis will contact owners of affected vehicles by mail starting April 17, 2023. They may also contact Genesis at 855-371-9460.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V094. Genesis’ own number for this recall is 012G.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
