Honda Accord Sedans Recalled for Driveshaft Failures

Road salt may cause the driveshaft on 2013 models to rust prematurely, which could cause issues, including a sudden loss of power

Honda is recalling over 65,000 2013 Accord sedans equipped with four-cylinder engines and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) because their driveshafts may fail. This may cause the vehicles to suddenly lose power while driving, or to roll away while the vehicle is in Park.

    More on Car Recalls

Because the problem involves exposure to road salt, only vehicles originally sold or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin are included in this recall.

The problem is due to the lubricant used while assembling the driveshafts of the affected vehicles. It can degrade protective coatings and allow road salt and other debris to get into the driveshaft, which could accelerate rust and lead to a failure.

To fix the problem, Honda dealers will replace the driveshaft assembly on affected vehicles, free of charge. Owners who have already paid for a related repair may be able to seek reimbursement for their repair costs.

Honda issued another recall for a similar issue in 2020. The automaker tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or warranty claims related to this recall.
