American Honda Motor Co. is recalling more than 750,000 vehicles from Honda and Acura due to concerns that the front passenger airbag may deploy with a small person in that position.

The front passenger seat weight sensor may crack and short circuit in these vehicles, risking the deployment of the airbag in a collision, potentially causing injury. The sensor is intended to suppress the airbag if there is a child or a small adult seated there.

“All children 13 years and younger should be seated in the backseat and restrained with the appropriate car seat or vehicle belt for every ride,” says Emily A. Thomas, PhD, manager of auto safety at Consumer Reports. “Following this advice minimizes any risk associated with frontal airbag interaction.”

As of Jan. 25, 2024, Honda has had 3,834 warranty claims, and no reports of injuries or deaths related to this issue.

Dealerships will replace the defective part. Owners who paid for a related repair are eligible for reimbursement.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 18, 2024.

The problem: The front passenger seat weight sensor may crack and short circuit, failing to suppress the airbag as intended.

The fix: Dealers will replace the seat weight sensors, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Contact Honda at 888-234-2138.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V064000. Honda’s numbers for these recalls are XHP and VHQ.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
