Honda Civic Sedans and Hatchbacks Recalled for Steering Problems

An incorrectly assembled part may damage the vehicle’s tires

Honda is recalling over 176,000 Civic sedans and hatchbacks from the 2022 through 2024 model years because a faulty part of their power steering systems could cause tire damage.

    MORE ON RCar ECALLS

All recalled vehicles already had their power steering racks replaced, but the replacement part was improperly calibrated at the factory. Drivers of all 2022 through 2024 Civics should check to see if their vehicle is part of the recall even if they are unaware of a prior steering rack repair, because it could have been done before their ownership began.

If the problem occurs, drivers may notice noise coming from the front tires while turning, according to documents provided by Honda to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Honda dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the steering rack and damaged front tires, free of charge. Owners who have already paid for this repair out of pocket may be able to seek reimbursement from Honda.

    Honda Civic Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: Honda Civics manufactured between Apr. 6, 2021, and Aug. 17, 2023

The problem: An improperly assembled steering rack may allow tires and/or tire chains to rub against the vehicle’s lower suspension or tire rod end, which could cause tire damage.

The fix: Honda dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the power steering rack free of charge. If the problem has caused tire damage, dealerships will also replace the tires, according to documents provided by the automaker.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Honda at 888-234-2138.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V704. Honda’s own number for this recall is YFW.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
