Honda Odyssey Minivans Recalled to Fix Faulty Airbags, Following Injuries

The side curtain airbags may unexpectedly deploy when there hasn't been a crash

Honda is recalling over 440,000 Odyssey minivans from the 2018 through 2022 model years because their side curtain airbags may suddenly deploy, even if there hasn’t been a crash. According to the automaker, this issue has led to 25 injuries.

MORE ON RECALLS

The problem has to do with how the minivan’s software determines whether the airbags should deploy. Faulty parameters may cause the airbags to deploy when driving over a pothole, a speed bump, or road debris, which can increase the risk of injuries to occupants.

According to documentation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Honda first started investigating the problem in 2017 after learning about a related incident, but determined in 2021 that there was no safety concern. In 2023, Honda changed the Odyssey’s airbag deployment parameters. Honda started studying the issue again in 2026, after NHTSA notified the automaker that it was investigating owner complaints.

Documents shared by NHTSA show that, in addition to the 25 injuries, there have also been 130 warranty claims and no fatalities. The records also indicate that Honda may have been aware of the problem for more than five days before filing a report with the agency, which could potentially lead to civil penalties for the manufacturer.
