Hyundai is recalling more than 135,000 Santa Fe SUVs from the 2024 and 2025 model years because a manufacturing error may cause them to catch fire after a crash.

    More On Car Recalls

The problem is caused by an improperly installed starter motor that could short-circuit if it comes into contact with the cooling fan assembly in a crash. To fix the defect, Hyundai dealerships will inspect and reinstall the starter motor, free of charge.

The automaker says it discovered the problem during crash testing and that it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the recall. Unlike some other Hyundai fire-related recalls, owners of these recalled vehicles are not instructed to park outside, and the risk of fire is only after a crash.

Hyundai Santa Fe Fire Risk Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs with 2.5-liter turbocharged gas engines manufactured between Dec. 28, 2023, and July 7, 2025.

The problem: An improperly installed cover may allow the starter motor’s B+ terminal to come into contact with the cooling fan assembly during a crash and cause an electrical short, which could lead to a fire.

The fix: Hyundai dealerships will inspect and reinstall the starter motor free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Hyundai at 855-371-9460.

NHTSA campaign number: 25V659. Hyundai’s own number for this recall is 285.
