Jeep Recalls Grand Cherokees That Could Lose Steering Control

An improperly assembled steering column is to blame

Jeep is recalling nearly 90,000 Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L SUVs from the 2021 through 2023 model years because a part of their steering systems could fail. If this happens, drivers could lose control of the vehicle and cause a crash.

The problem is due to an error during the assembly process. The steering column’s intermediate shaft—which connects the steering wheel to the rest of the steering setup—may not have been installed properly, and could detach. Before the intermediate shaft detaches, drivers may hear a noise when turning the steering wheel or notice some “play” in the steering—meaning that the steering wheel can move back and forth an inch or so without turning the front wheels. Jeep dealerships will replace this part if necessary, free of charge.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Jeep says it is not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this recall.

    The Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs manufactured between Oct. 19, 2021, and April 4, 2023
    • Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs manufactured between Jan. 27, 2021, and April 4, 2023

The problem: An improperly assembled intermediate steering shaft could disconnect while driving and cause loss of steering control.

The fix: Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the intermediate shaft and assembly parts, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Jeep at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V352. Jeep’s own number for this recall is 58A.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
