Jeep Recalls Wrangler SUVs and Gladiator Pickups Again for Fire Risk

In vehicles with manual transmissions, part of the clutch assembly may overheat, which could cause a fire and leave hazardous debris on the road

Jeep is recalling over 69,000 Wrangler SUVs from the 2018 through 2023 model years and Gladiator pickups from the 2020 through 2023 model years with manual transmissions because a problem with the clutch pressure plate could cause a fire.

This recall is an expansion of a prior recall which did not include vehicles from as many model years.

If the clutch pressure plate overheats and fractures, hot debris could be expelled from the transmission case, according to documents Jeep provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This debris could cause a road hazard for other drivers, and could also cause a fire in the vehicle or the surrounding area if it comes into contact with an ignition source.

Before the clutch pressure plate fails, drivers may notice a burning smell, clutch slippage, and/or a warning light on the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel.

There is currently no fix for this issue, but Jeep tells NHTSA that one is under development. Jeep dealerships performed a software update to address the previous recall, but owners who had that fix performed will still need an additional repair once it is ready. Learn what to do if your car has a recall without a fix yet.

The automaker says that it is aware of 26 customer assistance records, 36 warranty claims, six field reports, one injury, and no crashes that could be related to this issue.

    The Details

    Vehicles Recalled
    • Jeep Wrangler SUVs manufactured between Aug. 23, 2017, and Feb. 16, 2023
    • Jeep Gladiator pickup trucks manufactured between Dec. 21, 2018, and Feb. 16, 2023

The problem: Due to a design specification, the clutch pressure plate could fracture due to overheating. If this happens, the hot debris could cause a fire and/or create a road hazard.

The fix: Jeep is currently working on a fix for the issue and will notify owners as soon as it is available.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Jeep at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V116. Jeep’s own number for this recall is 19A.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
