Jeep Wrangler SUV Recalled for Fire Risk

In a crash, a fastener may puncture the fuel tank and cause a fire

Jeep is recalling 35,829 Wrangler SUVs from the 2020 through 2023 model years to fix a problem that might cause a fire. (This figure is down from the originally reported 57,885, as the automaker further reviewed supplier records.)

These recalled vehicles have an unnecessary fastener—known as a frame stud—that was erroneously installed during production. In a crash, this fastener might puncture the gas tank and cause a leak, which could lead to a fire.

In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Jeep says that it is not aware of any incidents where this problem has occurred, nor is it aware of any injuries or crashes related to the issue. The automaker says it uncovered the problem after a report from an assembly plant that mentioned the fastener.

On vehicles with the unnecessary part, Jeep dealerships will remove the frame stud and paint the frame. As is always the case with recalls, the repair will be free of charge.

Earlier this month, some Jeep Wranglers from the same model years were recalled for another unrelated fire-related issue.

    The Details

Vehicles recalled: Jeep Wrangler SUVs manufactured between Oct. 16, 2019, and May 14, 2022.

The problem: An unnecessary frame stud was installed on certain vehicles during the production process. In a crash, this fastener could puncture the gas tank and cause a leak, which could lead to a fire.

The fix: Jeep dealerships will inspect vehicles to see whether there is an erroneously installed frame stud. If there is one, they will remove it and apply paint to the vehicle frame, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Jeep at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 23V191. Jeep’s own number for this recall is 28A.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
