Mazda CX-90 Recalled Due to Steering Concerns

An assembly problem could lead to a loss of power steering assist

Mazda is recalling 43,752 CX-90 three-row SUVs because an assembly issue could cause the steering system to lose power assist.

The automaker advises that drivers may experience a “sudden and unexpected change of steering effort,” which could increase the risk of a crash.

The problem has been traced to a worm gear within the steer assembly (which transmits the power assist generated by the power steering motor). Friction from the worm gear can make the SUV harder to steer.

Dealers will replace the spring engaging the worm gear with an improved part that reduces spring force to that gear, and they will also reapply grease to the gear teeth, at no charge.

Mazda is not aware of any reports of crashes or injuries related to this concern, as of Jan. 11, 2024. To date, there have been five reports of related steering problems.

Owners will be notified of the recall by mail starting March 18, 2024.

An improved steering gear assembly was put into production in December 2023.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
