More Jeep Cherokees Recalled for Rollaway Risk and Power Loss
The latest recall involves a software update for certain models of the SUV
Jeep is recalling nearly 26,000 Cherokee SUVs from the 2016 and 2017 model years because a part within the drivetrain may fail and cause the vehicle to roll away when parked or suddenly lose power while driving.
The problem has to do with a part called a power transfer unit (PTU) in the all-wheel-drive system. Over time, the PTU may fail, which could cause a loss of power when the vehicle is in motion or prevent drivers from putting the vehicle in Park.
Jeep says it will address the issue with a software update that sends power to the rear wheels if the PTU fails while in motion, or engage the electronic parking brake if a failed PTU prevents the vehicle from being put into Park. The automaker already recalled more than 67,000 Cherokees in 2020 to replace faulty PTUs.
In documents provided to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Jeep says it is aware of no crashes or injuries, and 17 warranty claims and eight service records potentially related to this issue.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
