Park These Recalled BMWs Outside Due to Fire Risk

The recall involves 196,355 coupes, convertibles, sedans, and the related Toyota Supra

2019 BMW 3 Series Consumer Reports

BMW is warning owners of nearly 200,000 vehicles to park outside and away from structures until they get a free recall repair because a faulty engine starter relay may cause a fire.

    MORE ON SAFETY

    The vehicles are:

    • 2019-2021 BMW 330i sedans

    • 2019-2022 BMW Z4 coupes and convertibles

    • 2020-2022 BMW 530i sedans

    • 2020-2022 BMW X3 and X4 SUVs

    • 2021-2022 BMW 430i coupes and convertibles

    • 2022 BMW 230i coupes

    • 2020-2022 Toyota Supra coupes

To address the problem, dealerships will replace the faulty engine starters free of charge as soon as parts are available. Owners will receive two letters in the mail. The first one will explain the recall and the second will notify them when replacement parts are available.

The problem has to do with water getting into the engine starter’s electrical relay, which could lead to corrosion and cause a short circuit.

The automaker says it has investigated at least 11 field reports of vehicles with starter issues, including some that mention “thermal events,” but there have been no crashes or injuries related to the problem.
