Toyota SUVs and Trucks Recalled Due to Concerns That They May Move Forward Unintentionally

Toyota Motor Sales is recalling certain Sequoia SUVs and Tundra pickup trucks, and Lexus LX 600 SUVs because the transmission may not disengage when the vehicles are shifted to Neutral.

As a consequence, their engines may continue to transfer some power to the wheels, allowing the vehicles to move forward at a low speed, risking a crash.

This recall impacts about 280,000 SUVs and trucks. The fix is a software update.

Owners will be notified of the recall and remedy by late April 2024.

    Toyota and Lexus Recall Details

    Vehicles recalled:

    • Toyota Tundra pickup trucks manufactured between Nov. 2, 2021 and Dec. 22, 2023

    • Toyota Tundra Hybrid pickup trucks manufactured between March 15, 2021 and Dec. 21, 2023

    • Toyota Sequoia Hybrid SUVs manufactured between Aug. 31, 2022 and Dec. 5, 2023

    • Lexus LX600 SUVs manufactured between July 30, 2021 and Jan. 15, 2024

The problem: The transmission may not immediately disengage when the vehicle is shifted to Neutral, enabling the vehicle to move under power—unless the brakes are applied.

The fix: Toyota and Lexus dealers will update the software for the transmission at no cost to customers.

How to contact the manufacturer: Reach Toyota customer service at 800-331-4331 and Lexus customer service at 800-255-3987.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V125. Toyota’s own numbers for this recall are 24TA02 and 24LA02.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
