Toyota is recalling about 381,000 Tacoma pickup trucks from the 2022 and 2023 model years because of a potential problem with the rear axle.

    MORE ON Car RECALLS

The automaker says that during the manufacturing process, welding debris left on the ends of the rear axle assembly could cause parts to separate from the axle. If this happens, it could affect vehicle stability and braking, and may lead to a crash.

About 381,000 trucks are involved in this recall.

To fix the problem, Toyota dealerships will inspect the rear axle assembly and retighten axle retaining nuts free of charge. If necessary, dealerships will also repair and replace any damaged parts.

Toyota Tacoma Rear Axle Recall Details

Vehicles recalled: 2022-2023 Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks.

The problem: Due to an error in the manufacturing process, welding debris on the ends of the rear axle assembly could cause retaining nuts to loosen over time and fall off. If this happens, parts could separate from the axle, which may lead to a crash.

The fix: Toyota dealerships will inspect and retighten the retaining nuts and, if necessary, replace any damaged components. As with all recalls, the fix is free of charge, and owners who already paid for a repair may be eligible for reimbursement.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may call Toyota at 800-331-4331.

NHTSA campaign number: NHTSA has yet to release number for this recall.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall. NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have one. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly.
