Volkswagen and Audi are recalling over 60,000 Volkswagen ID.4 electric vehicles and Audi Q4 E-Tron electric vehicles because the display behind the steering wheel may not show which gear the vehicle is in. If this happens, drivers may not realize the car is in Neutral, which could increase the risk of the vehicle rolling away.

    MORE ON Car RECALLS

The problem is due to a software error that, in certain situations, may not show whether the vehicle is in Neutral. To fix the issue, Volkswagen and Audi dealers will perform a free software update. The repair also puts the vehicles in compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards regarding gear shifters.

In documents provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the automakers say they discovered the problem after reports from consumers.
