Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2017 Chevrolet Bolt owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"It had been working most of the time up until 2 or 3 months ago; since then, my phone reports a communication error 11 when it tries to connect."

Peter D., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Android Auto occasionally disconnects from my phone. I only use Android Auto for navigation using Google Maps."

Anthony D., OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"There was confusion about whether I needed an ATT subscription to make the system work. I hadn't needed that for 14 months, and suddenly it was the only remedy for the problem."

Susan H., VA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Apple CarPlay

"Display did not match the audio being played from my iPhone. Other smaller annoyances."

Robert B., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Poorly designed product, Hard to use the GPS feature without losing other functions on the display. Apple maps are far inferior to Google, which we would prefer to use. Even with a passenger doing the actual interactions with the screen, it is difficult to make it work effectively. Much inferior to installed GPS systems we have used before."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Backup or other camera/sensors

"Periodically (once a month on average) the camera fails to turn on when the engine starts -- for periods up to 19 minutes. During that time none of the display's functions, including the radio, come on either."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"At times the center display would continue to show the rear camera until the car was stopped and restarted. It took Chevrolet 15 months to finally do the software upgrade to fix this."

John Z., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)
Display screen freezes up

"only happened a few times - once every few months"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Occasionally on startup, the screen freezes and the volume of the startup sound goes to maximum for about 10 seconds."

James D., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"The display screen froze up along with many of the controls. The car had to be towed to the dealership. The dealership was not able to fix it when this recurred 3 different times within a 3 month period until GM corporate got involved. The problem has not recurred in the last 5 months. The car spent over 6 weeks at the dealership dealing with this problem."

Allen G., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Just happened today, and it had happened before. The screen gets stuck displaying the backup camera view even when I am driving forward. I was able to resolve this only after turning the car off and on twice."

Susan H., VA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Despite a software update the infotainment system regularly (~3 times month) crashes, rendering ALL functions inoperable: radio, Apple, car information, tire pressure ... The system eventually reboots after 5 to 15 minutes. Its also learned a new trick ... about every fourth time I start the car, it plays the radio for approximately 5 minutes then just stops and goes silent. Other audio (Apple) continues to work, but the radio doesn't function until I restart the car."

Eliot M., OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Only happened one time."

Les P., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"The problem was that the infotainment screen froze up. I took it to the dealer to address, it re-occurred afterwards and is now the subject of an electronic re-call which will be addressed remotely."

Mark S., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"The screen sometimes freezes on the camera - ie you are driving down the road with the front camera feeding directly into the large screen that is your peripheral line of sight. it is very distracting and dangerous"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Software fix...It needed a software update which promptly fixed the problem."

Mitch E., WA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Screen would freeze when plugging phone in for navigation. Was recalled to repair."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Screen freezes periodically. I turn everything off, and leave the car. When I return, all is working. CHEVROLET has promised a down load fix soon."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Approximately once a week the system will stop responding especially if a smartphone is connected via the USB port, multiple software updates have not completely resolved"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"There is a recall that has not been completed ; A Temporary fix requires you to stop turn off the car and restart 1 or more times."

Anonymous, WA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Driver display screen (mph, odometer, state of charge, etc.) froze at 0 mph while driving."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Display screen goes blank

"Occasionally car will start but the information window will not light up. Will drive some 10-15minutes and the window will boot up. This happens about twice a month. Occasionally the backup camera will not engage. This has not happened for several months."

Richard P., PA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Has happened only twice, comes on after a while"

Stuart M., CO (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Display screen maybe once every 2 months will only turn on after about 15minutes of driving."

Richard P., PA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"See previous"

George B., CO (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Occassionally, the display screen is blank when starting the car. A software update did not correct this. The only fix is to reboot the infotainment system."

Anthony D., OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"On an intermittent basis, the display screen would remain blank at power on of car. After about 5 minutes, display would wake up and operate in a normal fashion. Resolution was to replace the full entertainment module."

Arthur B., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"It was replaced and I am happy with how it was handled."

David K., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"During start up, screen should show radio, climate, etc. But it stays blank, about 3-5min later, large letters, BOLT shows up, stays there for a min or 2, as if a computer is booting up. Then the screen is ok, all is displayed and working, Dealer proformed software update, last month, still not fixed. Scheduled for another update later this month."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"A recent recall was supposed to address this problem. so far (3 weeks) that may be working. Most unnerving was the loss of the backup camera. (The camera in the rear view mirror continued to work, but that is not sufficient for backing up.)"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"When using bluetooth interface music from phone periodically drops in amplitude w/ regularity."

Sam F., NY (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Randomly and silently switches between car speaker and phone speaker, when Im on a call, so I will suddenly not be able to hear the other person and/or they suddenly can't hear me."

Caitlin C., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Electric)

"The car drops the phone randomly, then picks it up again. Sometimes it refuses to connect to any phones - not just mine."

Anonymous, OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Radio

"Bad reception of radio"

Anonymous, QC (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Routine software updates

"Not actually a problem - there are occasionally over-the-air software updates that take a few minutes - the car cannot be driven or turned on during the update. This hasn't been a real issue."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Software update fixes

"2017 early production Bolts were subject to a recall regarding measuring the battery charge. Car was brought to dealer and the firmware in a particular module was updated."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Had to take car in for recall software update"

Stuart M., CO (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Don't completely fix problem of display screen blanking occasionally at startup thru about first mile driving. This is not small accelerator screen at steering wheel but soft switches on display screen being unavailable means no ability to start cabin heating, etc. Lo software updates only provided at dealers despite connection to Internet in my garage v ok a WiFi. Software fixes don't so far."

George B., CO (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Steering wheel controls

"Buttons on steering wheel would not function. After car turned off, they would work. Happened two times."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Voice control commands

"Car requires manual b/t connection to use the navigator."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Driveshaft or axle

"Axle/cv joint boot cracked, entire axle replaced under warranty."

Robert F., NY (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)
Electrical failure

"Something in the battery sensor failed and the car stalled and would not restart. Had it towed to dealer."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"charging system failure resulting in 1 week downtime"

Gerald S., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Main drive battery for the car failed. IT was replaced under warranty by GM."

Michael S., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Car appeared to be operating normally and was parked overnight. The next day, it was completely inoperative. 12 volt battery was found to be dead. After jump start, car was plugged in and charged for 60 hours. Then it started, but would not go into drive or reverse and had to be towed to dealer. Dealer reported that 12 volt battery was discharged when car received, battery tested good, and could find no explanation for what happened. Currently, two weeks later, car is operating normally but, obviously, is known to become inoperative without warning. Dealer provided no answer when asked what would happen if the 12 volt battery, which it had been demonstrated could die without warning, died while driving at high speed. Two weeks ago, the service manager said he would consult a GM engineer and call me back, but he hasn't. Chevrolet Customer Satisfaction failed to help; the rep said he called the dealer and asked them to call me, but they didn't. He said tha's all he could do."

Frank W., AR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Battery had bad cells and when low enough would die completely very quickly. Happened three times before dealer finally understood what was happening and replaced traction battery under warranty."

David B., RI (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"Car stopped completely and would not move when remaining miles dropped from 48 to 0 in 30 seconds. Replaced high voltage drive battery. Had at least 4 software upgrades in the past few months."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"the battery failed when the instruments showed approximately 20% power (40 miles) remaining."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"The high voltage battery was recalled and replaced because Chevrolet found some of them to be defective. Some cells were faulty and battery didn't hold the appropriate charge which lead to less mileage than advertised."

Jorge B., WA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"One morning the car would not start, and listed one by one every component as “failed” on the screen. Then the screen tuned off, the parking brake automatically actived, and all lights went out. It was dead to the world. The battery was almost fully charged. The dealership had it towed from my garage. They had no idea what was wrong, it took them two weeks to get the car back to me in working order. They said an EV specialist came into town to fix it, but left no explanation of what was wrong. Eesh"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Traction control

"Light comes on indicating a problem with antiskid system. instructions say to get inspected. Dealer drove car but light did not come on. No fix as judged as no problem. I have not had any actual problems in driving. I am not a skiddish driver."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"If anyone sat in the passenger seat, the seatback would squeak. I took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer kept the vehicle for two days and fixed the squeak."

James C., OK (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Electric)

"There's not a lot to say other than the rattles are mostly from the rear of the vehicle"

Joseph J., CO (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"While not an issue in terms of safety or reliability, the dashboard (all of it), rattles constantly and you can feel it move in an abrupt stop."

Shawn L., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"A rattle of the plastic housing against the windshield behind the forward-looking camera in front of the rear-view mirrror"

Anonymous, OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Eliot M., OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Automatic climate control

"The climate control system in the bolt is terrible. The vents cannot be mechanically closed, and the electronic controls don't work immediately, and there is always leakage from vents not selected."

Karl S., CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

""Hard buttons" on the dash were non-operational when purchased. Climate control on /off functionality worked VI's infotainment system, but unable to raise or lower temps or fanspeed or adjust where air comes from. Stuck on 70degrees and auto fan setting. Vehicle has been in the shop for 26 calendar days as I type this with no fix identified. Notified local dealership of issue on April 3rd scheduled an appt for April 11 and vehicle remains in shop today may 7th"

Blake A., OR (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Heater system

"TAkes a long time for heating system to activate - i.e., long time of cold air blowing. But heated stearing wheel and seats heat up nice."

Anonymous, MN (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)

"The car came new with completely non-functional heating. Haven't gotten around to getting it fixed."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

"Heater never worked right but since I got this car August, I did not discover the heater issue until cold weather arrived in Massachusetts. I brought the car back to the dealer. They brought in a Bolt specialist from outside the area. He completely replaced the heating system, by borrowing one from another Bolt on their lot. No charge to me but it took 3 days to get done. They gave me a loaner SUV to drive. No problems with the heat since, except that it eats a lot of the battery power and reduces the range of this all electric car a lot. I try not to use the heat if possible."

David D., MA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt LT Electric)

Gloria F., WA (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Hybrid/electric battery replacement

"My wife was driving on the highway and the car immediately shut down. She was forced to pull over across several lanes of traffic and wait for roadside assistance. Apparently, the entire battery system completely failed making the car totally inoperable."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Chevrolet Bolt Premier Electric)
Hybrid/electric system and battery (excluding replacement)

"While driving on the freeway, the car displayed an error and lost all propulsion. I rolled to the side of the freeway. When I attempted to restart, I got a different error and the car would not move. It was towed to a dealer and ultimately spent 20 DAYS at the dealer before it was repaired."
