Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2010 Chevrolet Malibu owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Alarm or security system (excluding aftermarket systems)

"key fob does not lock or unlock the car every time it is used --sometimes it does batteries are o k in the fob and the car. no one has an explanation for the problem."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Electrical system went haywire. Could not enter car, alarm was going off randomly and all displays were going off including not letting car start."

Anonymous, IL (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 3.6-L V6)
Body control module

"Traction control, stability control, and cruise control would spontaneously go off, and brake lights would malfunction. Recall would not cover my V.I.N. #, so had to pay. GM wanted to do hundreds of dollars worth of diagnostic testing first, but my personal mechanic told me it was the BCM. GM would not give my mechanic the codes to program a new BCM, so I had to go to the dealership. The brake lights especially were a safety issue (would turn on spontaneously, but turn off when the brake pedal was pushed!), and should've been covered by the recall. The recall did not cover all vehicles with the problem, and had a cut-off of 240,000 km. Unacceptable as far as I am concerned. My father had been a life-long GM driver, and so was I, but no more!"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"This was an Chevy recall"

Anonymous, MN (2010 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Car wouldn't start. Thought it was fixed but then wouldn't start again. A combination of the body control module and the security system. Part of recall"

Anonymous, SK (2010 Chevrolet Malibu 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"received recall letter but i was not having problems; took car to dealer for recall repair and had multiple problems afterwards; took car back to dealer who fixed problems as original recall repair was not done correctly"

Anonymous, OH (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Cruise control

"failed to stay engaged. gm finally changed the computer"

Anonymous, ON (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Went in and out, fixed last fall, recurring again"

Stgeorge S., VA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ 3.6-L V6)

"The stick that has the cruise control and blinker lights had to be replaced because the blinker lights would not cancel correctly. Some times they would cancel and sometimes they wouldn't. Had to replace the entire stalk containing the blinker light switch"

Forrest F., TX (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Exterior lights (other than headlights)

"Third light went out. Received a notice from GM re this problem. CHEVROLET tech told me this did not relate to notice, unit replaced at the cost of $600.00. I contacted GM and they confirmed not covered."

Headlights

"need to pull front end to change headlamps"

Norman C., MA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The entire front end of the body has to be removed just to change a headlamp. I've replaced the low-beam headlamp 3 times in just over a year's time. I hope the use of dielectric grease will forestall any more replacement exercises."

Scott M., FL (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"My right headlight bulb did not light up. I noticed it and had it repaired. Because of the labor cost to change the bulb, I had all the bulbs changed."

Anonymous, IN (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"right headlamp works intermittently on 'low' beam; functions find on 'high'"

Anonymous, CA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 3.6-L V6)

"it was difficult to replace the headlight bulb. there is a lot of screws, bolts, plastic retainers (that break sometimes during removal) the whole nose facia has to be removed to access the bulb"

Anonymous, PA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Interior lights

"The dashboard lights sometimes come on quickly and sometimes they take 20 minutes"

Jerry M., TX (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Dash lighting, speedometer does not activate consistently. Driving without being able to easily see mph, gas gauge, etc"

Colleen R., MI (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Keyless entry

"drivers door wouldn't unlock"

Shawn K., OH (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Tire pressure monitor

"One wheel sensor doesn't work. Low tire pressure warning light is always onon my dashboard, but in actuality, all of the tires are at the correctl tire pressure. There is no easy do -it-yourself way to tell which wheel pressure monitor is bad (likely bad battery in one TPS sensor). Three tires display their tire pressure and one doesn't indicate any tire pressure. The system is a nuisance and I could do without it altogether as we did in the old days. I check tire pressure regularly with a tire pressure gauge anyway, and can usually tell just by visually looking at my tires if any are significantly low in tire pressure."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Two tire pressure monitors had to be replaced"

Anonymous, FL (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Electronic wiring is all stuffed under the seats and is prone to damage from placing items under the seats, or from feet of people riding in the backseat. This is the cause of erroneous seatbelt warnings."

Scott M., FL (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Passenger seat belt sensor fails so it does not recognize when seat belt is being used and gives warning light and dings"

George R., NY (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Rough shifting

"Since purchase, rough shifting when in stop and go traffic. The clunk actually feels like someone bumped the backend of car. Does not happen in all situations, just in very heavy traffic. Chevrolet service said software update was needed, 3 years ago. Don, but no change."

Cynthia V., CA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"They tell me nothing is wrong but I keep wondering if I am loosing my transmission.Shifts hard around 35 mph and then at about 62 mph"

Anonymous, WA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 3.6-L V6)

"Each year, the rpms have been increasing when shifting in first and second gear. Then when it shifts, the car has jerked more each year. Last, sometimes the car seems like it will stall when it is shifting either in first or second so I have to push"

Anonymous, NY (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"When moving at slow crawl, transmission seams to be in wrong gear. Acts like its in 3rd when should be in 1st, then when trying to accelerate, hesitates for a second then slams into 1st gear with a jolt. Does this everytime at a slow crawl"

Slipping transmission

"Problems in heavy traffic, transmissions slips noisily."

Cynthia V., CA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Initial symptom was with transmission slipping a bit, or perhaps slightly slamming, into 5th gear. Problem later spread to occur with other speeds/gears until the transmission finally failed"

Anonymous, CT (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Transmission computer

"Since I first got the car, it would occasionally experience throttle bounce around 40-50 mph, particularly in hot weather. It seemed as though the computer could not decide when to shift from 4th to 5th gear. Putting it manual and using the paddle shifters seemed to get around this. However, the transmission did ultimately live a short life, and I am suspicious that the computer issue is what led caused it. The replacement transmission has upgraded firmware, and it has never had this problem."

Theodore B., CT (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Computer or a sensor failed (don't know the details) resulting in loss of ability to shift. That is NOT a minor problem. We managed to limp to a dealer. The problem was repaired under waranttee. It took them 5 days to fix it, but they supplied a rent"

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Two months after warranty expired A/C compressor failed, GM wouldn't help resulting in a cost of $1,600 for repairs"

Niall R., BC (2010 Chevrolet Malibu 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"During acceleration, the air conditioner turns off which allows greater acceleration which tells the air conditioner to turn back on. This causes a pulsating effect as the compressor keeps turning on and off during acceleration"

Anonymous, MD (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Was getting ready to drive to work one morning, shifting began to slip badly. Lost reverse and most gears shortly after. Just made it to the auto shop in 1st gear, was lucky to do that. Shop tried to repair the transmission but ran into all kinds of computer problems, unit would work for 50 miles or so then have refuse to go past 3rd gear. They consulted with a GM tech who could not figure it out either. Had to replace with a GM re-manufactured transmission."

Theodore B., CT (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Car would not go in reverse or shift gears going forward."

Conrad H., OH (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The original automatic transmission always shifted roughly at times and when it started slipping and almost not function, it had to be replaced. The new transmission sifts roughly at times, the same as the old. Chevrolet does not produce a good transmission for this car."

Anonymous, TX (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 3.6-L V6)

"Car would not respond to gas, stalled. Dealer determined that transmission could not be repaired. Since I was 1,000 miles from home, I had not choice but to replace. $4,000 repair on a 9-year-old, 100K mile car. :-("

Anonymous, TX (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Turns out the 2010 Malibu has a known issue with the transmission. It seems to crap out around 100,000. Mine stopped working after about 95,000 miles."

John L., NY (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Worked fine till parked. When started again limped home with much transmission slippage. Had to have it towed to a shop for rebuild."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I started driving home from work. Everything seemed normal. I stopped at a red light. When I began accelerating the low traction light came on. It went off in about 5 seconds . Then I started hearing a banging sound under the hood. It continued until I could not go forward. I got towed in. My regular repair shop told me it, the transmission just simply failed. This happened at 67,500 miles."

Robert B., IN (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"it took the shop 4 trips to rebuild the transmission and get it in working order"

Jon P., CA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Purchased veh with 104000 Mar 16. Trans went out Jun 16 at 107000. Rebuilt by non- dealer location. Trans went out again Oct 16 at 110000. Fixed under non-dealer warranty. Today Apr 17 starting to slip again"

Michael G., GA (2010 Chevrolet Malibu LT 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Car is actually in for service right now. Check engine light came on, lost use of all but first gear. Mechanic indicated drumhead failure is not durable in this car, prone to failure/internal damage. He will rebuild the transmission using aftermarket parts that have been shown to address the problem. I have also observed issues with the transmission having trouble "deciding" when to shift; he indicated the transmission's speed sensor, which he is also replacing, may be what caused this"

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Check Engine Light: P0443 Evaporative Emission Control System Purge Control Valve Circuit. Changed gas cap. Self installed new ACD#214-1946 GM#12611800 Canister Purge Valve. Self installed new ACD#213-1677 MAF Mass Air Flow Meter/Sensor. Dealer installed ACD#214-2311 GM#13575701 Vapor Canister-Solenoid. Must lower gas tank to install. None of this solved the problem. Dealer finally found that changing the connectors somewhere in these systems did the trick. Cost over $600 to find and fix connectors that were under engineered in the first place. I have owned many Japanese cars over the last 30 years, none of them ever had such terrible engineering. I decided to purchase a CHEVROLET again after 30 years only to find that the quality of engineering was far below that of Japanese cars. I have had to deal with airbag connector under the seats that had to be replaced. Dash lights that completely go out. GM Recall 13036 Body Control Module for brake lamp malfunction. ESC warning lights."
