Owner Reports

Worse Better
Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Satisfaction Owner Satisfaction To learn about satisfaction, CR has collected survey data from our annual survey on more than half a million vehicles. Our subscribers provide great insights into their satisfaction by answering one simple question: If they had it to do all over again, would they definitely buy or lease the same model? In addition, respondents also rate their cars in six categories: driving experience, comfort, value, styling, audio, and climate systems. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Premature brake wear

"One day I noticed that my brakes really grabbed and made a horrible metal sound when braking. I took it to the CHEVROLET dealer for an assessment. They determined that the brake pads were worn through and that the rotors needed replacement. I was shocked since the car only had 50K miles on it. (I've owned several Toyotas in the past and none of them had this problem at such an early age or even as they aged.) I paid $850 for the job and was angry as I realized that the job should have cost a lot less. So I feel that between the car needing this early extensive brake job and the cost to fix it that I was ripped off twice."

"Brakes wore only after about 6 months"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I have replaced the rotors and brakes on this vehicle three times in 73K miles with GM parts at the dealer. The miles driven are all highway miles. Other GM vehicles owned have not come close to this amount of repair and replacement. There is an obvious design flaw or cheap materials built in somewhere."

William O., PA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ 3.6-L V6)
Regular brake failure

"The Brakes rusted and had to be totally replaced."

Ernest D., MI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The rotor issue is part of the overall brake job issue that I described in the previous section."

Anonymous, OR (2012 Chevrolet Malibu 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I have replaced the rotors in this car twice in less than a year, and it now feels like I will have to replace them a third time in less than 2 years. I have no idea why they are wearing out so quickly"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Chevrolet Malibu LS 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
