The four-cylinder Malibu was updated with a six-speed automatic transmission that improves fuel economy and throttle response for this model year. Otherwise, Malibu remains well rounded overall. The car handles well and has a competent powertrain, along with a very quiet, spacious and well-trimmed cabin.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Handles nicely, acceleration is poor. 4 cylinder is undersized and gets poor gas mileage, should have gotten the 6 cylinder."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Handles well, parks well (I can judge where the front and rear of the car ends)"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"6 speed transmission enables the 4 cylinder engine to have a sprightly feel, and the car handles bumps well and handling is firm enough. There is plenty of road noise"

ROGER H., LA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"under powered with 4 cylinder engine compared to previous Malibu that had a 6 cylinder. Otherwise a good performer. Serves our needs very well."

P M., IN (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"feel slighty cramped when driving"

WILLIAM N., NY (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Easy to maneuver."

Lynn O., MI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Handles great with good acceleration."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"My wife drives this car 90% of the time. She has mentioned numerous times how loves how it steers and accelerates."

Robert B., IN (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"WE LIKE IT !!"

Anonymous, NV (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Handles well but engine is a bit sluggish."

Bob O., KY (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"very satisfied"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Could have better acceleration. Handling could be better and taking curves and corners could be more tight."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Nice ride. good brakes. Entry requires a bit of stooping down similar to entering a sports car. Good visibility to front but not to the rear. Steering a bit slow but predicable."

- S., AZ (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Large turning circle. Transmission sometimes shifts very hard. Transmission is often confused about what gear it should be in. The engine performance is sub par for a car that cost what the LTZ Malibu did."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"It handles well in the snow. It is easy to drive and because it does not have much electronic equipment on it, it is easy to drive. There is less distraction so it would be a good car for a teen to learn to drive."

Lynn O., MI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Noise is very low, climate control works well. The ride is nice and controlled. The interior is not holding up well, seat is cracking already from a small female driver and low mileage."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Good"

JACK M., IN (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Seats are a little thin."

JOHN M., RI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"When back windows are open only, there is a ringing sound in the ears that is very piercing. When driving with all windows closed and no air or fan on, there is air that comes through the vents."

JUANITA D., CA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Condensation can be so bad on the inside that -all- windows often require cleaning with paper towels. Dealer brushed it off, no attempt to check it out. In the winter the windows are frequently covered with heavy frost which takes quite a while to clear-20 minutes or more. The automatic start keys have new batteries yet only work randomly. Again the dealer brushed it off."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The ride is not as comfortable as I would like. I feel every bump in the road even with new comfort ride tires. It would be helpful to have lumbar support in the front passenger seat, for times when I'm not driving. It would be helpful to have the cup holders with some kind of glow in the dark feature"

EVA L., ON (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"My wife constantly praises the comfort and quietness of the Malibu."

John M., RI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Comfortable ride, quite. Seats are low for me and the steering wheel does not adjust high enough."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The seat is adjustable and allows me to find a comfortable position during a long drive. I would like the seat to raise slightly higher and go back slightly further."

Anonymous, MN (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Quite comfortable seats. Lumbar control helps"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Noisy ride. Otherwise excellent"

Anonymous, MN (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Lumbar support is very good. Wouldn't purchase a car without it. And I do not get backaches when driving for long distances. The seat itself doesn't feel like your sitting level. It seems to be more worn on the side next to my door. I slide to the left and noticed it when I first bought the car and more now. I try to overcompensate by sitting farther on the right but it has never "balanced" out. Noise level is probably worse than average. I generally have to turn up radio when traveling."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"comfort seats"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Seats are not comfortable after 30 minutes"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I have never felt uncomfortable when driving. The seats adjust easily depending on where I want them to be. The heater works very well to comfort my back in the cold. This car is 6 years old and the functions I mentioned have never failed."

Norman P., OH (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"quiet; seats need more lumbar support"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"A great little sedan at a reasonable cost! I would purchase another one to replace it but will not buy anything from Mexico or Canada!"

Richard S., PA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Although I am not a big person, getting in and out of the front seats is not easy."

Anonymous, IN (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"This vehicle has had so many problems that I don't feel that I'm getting anywhere near my money's worth out of it. I have had to put over $3,000 in repairs into it in less than 2 years of ownership."

JOANNE P., ME (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I stalked this car online as it had been on the dealer lot for over a year so I knew they were desperate to unload it. I offered $18,000 for a $28,000 list price car thinking they would laugh - and they took it. I had a further $3,000 GM MasterCard rebate so the car was only $15,000. The only great deal on a car I've ever gotten. Felt like I stole it."

RICHARD M., MA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I generally don't buy form dealers because I feel I can get a better deal with private party. But I gave dealer a max. price and other conditions and he was able to get one at an auction for me."

DALE T., OR (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"This car does not have in dash navigation so I can not judge. Overall the car was overpriced and it lost it's value extremely fast."

Anonymous, WI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The price was very good for its value"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I have never ever gotten the fuel mileage advertised for this car, even when driving on the highway. This has been a disappointment. My 22 yr. old standard transmission Ford Ranger truck that died resulting in the purchase of the Malibu, got better mileage!"

MARY B., KY (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Dependable, comfortable and attractive. Very loyal to Chevrolet brand."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great reliable basic car, especially good in snow."

Lynn O., MI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"other than typical wear and tear (106000 miles) car has been very reliable. no complaints at all."

Anonymous, AR (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great got it new cheep"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"There were a few recalls which were promptly taken care of and since then the car has operated wonderfully well. I chose this car after reading CR in 2012."

Norman P., OH (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Look for one at several thousand dollars less then the big selling small cars. The 2012 was a good value but does not enjoy a good resale value."

Richard S., PA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Car is 6 yrs old now, and thus far NO significant problems. We do keep up on recommended service with original dealer."

Anonymous, NV (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Good quiet ride, ltz has a firm ride.Good breaking system. Plenty of power with v6"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The car has had little to no maintenance problems. I keep the car garaged and detail it myself. I love the car and it has not let me down. It looks after (6) years pretty darn good."

Robert B., IN (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"For the money it is an excecllent car. Handles reasonably well and also gives decent mileage"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"a good value. A bit sluggish mid range acceleration. Good fuel economy. Front seats a bit narrow and low."

- S., AZ (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Safe and reliable"

Bob O., KY (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"For it's price, it probably has been the most cost-effective car I've purchased. Was lucky to purchase it in one of the big sales for under 18,000 and it has all the bells and whistles that a much more epensive car has, as well as cery good mileage in the city."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"good on gas mileage"

Doug N., CA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great car for everyday driving. I was pleasantly surprised to find it is a good car for driving in the snow as well. It has heated seats, a decent ride, and probably could be a car we keep for quite a while."

Lynn O., MI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"nice"

Anonymous, LA (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I love the way it looks"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Prefer the styling of the Ford Fusion and the new Malibu."

REG E., ON (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I like the features on the steering wheel. Love the heated seats I would love a heated steering wheel and outside mirrors A WIPER ON THE BACK WINDOW SHOULD BE MANDATORY SAFETY ISSUE!"

EVA L., ON (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Everyone who gets in the car comments on how beautiful it is inside and out."

JOHN M., RI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)

"LOW PROFILE"

Anonymous, WI (2012 Chevrolet Malibu)
