Striking styling distinguishes the Chevrolet Malibu, complete with sumptuous curves that evoke the luxurious Audi A7. Beyond the style there is true substance, with a comfortable ride, an almost absurdly quiet cabin, and undaunting controls. And, compared to the previous model, the rear seat now has more room. But there are several form and functional setbacks that result from this swoopy look, most notably visibility.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“fast enough for me handles fine”

RICHARD E., WV (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“It practically drives itself.”

NONDA M., ID (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Great acceleration, terrifi handling, a pleasure to drive”

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Handling is excellent, precise, straight-arrow. No land-yacht leaning and dodging on cornering or emergency handling, that I've noticed. I'm very impressed with the acceleration, very strong when you need it, even though it's only a 1.5L engine, and I came from a 3.8L vehicle! Engine noise under normal driving is almost imperceptible. Engine noise is louder under hard acceleration (merging, passing), but seems mostly due to the turbocharger coming to life (this is NOT a knock). It can definit”

THOMAS C., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Great acceleration from small engine. Handling much more secure than previous Malibu (2004)”

HERBERT M., WA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“I am less satisfied with the cruise control. It has too much variation once Set.”

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“it is a 2016 limited,2.5l eng,it gets 35 mpg on highway,handles well,& is quiet”

RALPH R., MN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“the acceleration is quite touchy - the car tends to jerk a lot if you're not careful with the pedal. more than the other Malibu I drove before.”

DEB R., MN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“The ride is like you're floating along on a cloud. Tolerable road noise on broken, bumpy roads. Seats are comfortable. Rear seat has ample head and leg room for 6'4" individual, however, the seat is rather shallow so, there isn't much leg support and might get uncomfortable on long trips. The A/C functions well, and cool air distribution is good, though it takes somewhat longer for the back seat to get thoroughly cooled.”

THOMAS C., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Very quiet in passenger cabin. You can't hear the engine running at idle. The legroom and headroom are much better than my previous 2013 Malibu”

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“The power seats have a memory setting. The leather on these seats make them very comfortable. The climate control is automatic. I can set a temperature, and it maintains that setting. The noise level is low, except for noisy roads. The ride is very comfortable.”

R B., CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Excessive road noise. Varies with road surface, but is distracting at all levels. Groved roads as in some freeways are unbearable. Need ear plugs at times. Can't hear audio sysyem. Ride is stiff and jarring on all but the newest hard surface roads.”

STEVEN K., IL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Great ride, room, quiet, very nice ride. Lots of room in back. Big trunk and has a spare. Wow.”

WILLIAM M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“noise, not quiet like CR said it was.”

Anonymous, VA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Seats look and feel great (got leather). Ride is buttery smooth and blissfully quiet - reminds me of my aunt's early 1980's Pontiac Parisienne - plush and quiet.”

DAVID W., ON (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Rough, abrupt downshift on braking in Premier model (2.0 Turbo, 8 speed transmission).”

Anonymous, IN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“I had a difficult time getting use to and understanding the controls for the seats, warnings, all the new technology. There is a lot of technical things to know about this car because it has all the "bells and whistles"”

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Front seat comfort is poor overall, seat cushion is not competitive. Manual adjust seats are not optimized for all driver variations/sizes.”

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“easier to get in and out vs 2013 model”

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“seat comfort bad”

COLLIN S., IL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

DAVID C., FL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“The Malibu is a very nice car to drive. Handling is very good. The entertainment system is very good especially Android Auto capability. However the OnStar is too expensive as well as additional internet connection. I wish it had built in navigation, however Android Auto is used as navigation, but it does use some data. The styling is excellent.”

PETER C., NJ (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Side and rear styling are excellent, but the front looks very bland”

RICHARD R., ME (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“allgood”

JOHN P., NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Excellent styling”

Anonymous, BC (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Interior dashboard feels clunky. Like it was designed for elderly people who need big knobs and buttons.”

Anonymous, OH (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Great styling and good looking.”

WILLIAM M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“Fantastically beautiful styling - GM outdid themselves”

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

“I have told GM in the past that I have no use for OnStar and would rather not have it, but my opinion has not prevailed, and I am told that it is impossible to purchase a new GM vehicle without OnStar. The OnStar included with this vehicle requires that there be an antenna shaped like a shark fin in the rear middle of the roof. I think this really detracts from the appearance of the car.”
