The Silverado hasn't changed much since its 1999 introduction and doesn't compete well with more modern designs. Its highlights include a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a full-time mode and a high payload capacity. But its powertrain isn't as smooth as some models, such as the Toyota Tundra's or Nissan Titan's. Handling was ungainly, and the ride is stiff. Interior quality is below par.

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint was cracking and peeling on hood and other areas."

Barbara B., CA (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.2-L V8)

"Have had the entire hood and top repainted due to paint and clear coat chipping/peeling away in large chunks down to the primer. Just noticed in the last few months that the top of the doors where they curve around to meet the top, the clear coat is peeling away, although the paint is still intact. But this is how the top and hood started and then peeled away down to primer."

William G., TX (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.7-L V8)

"Summit white Paint started peeling and flaking after a couple of years, dealer would not address the issue, But I have a 2000 white Buick, 1997 white pontiac with no paint problems"

Nancy-Jim D., TX (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.2-L V8)

"I had the roof and hood repainted about 3 years ago due to the paint coming off in sheets, now the doors are starting to peel, first the clear coat and then the paint"

William G., TX (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.7-L V8)

"Paint was defective from the factory and problem started under the warranty and GM would not cover it."

Nancy-Jim D., TX (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.2-L V8)

"The truck started rusting about 2 months after the 10 year warranty expired. Truck was also "rustproof by dealer before delivery". I do live in a northern climate but was hoping that the metal coatings would protect my vehicle better. They do not. Every panel on the truck made out of metal is not just rusting they are disintegrating from the inside out. I am most worried about my frame doing the exact same thing because nowadays they use hydroformed metal to construct a frame on 1500 silverados. Hydroformed is a big word for to cheap pieces of metal pressed together to create a piece of steel said to be strong enough to replace a frame rail like they use on the 2500 and 3500 series. There was never any hope of getting to this problem early as all the panels are rusting from the inside of body out until paint bubbles up and flakes off. This system is most likely ok for southern climates but still is not much better than the metal used in 70's on forward. But now with your frame made out of this type metal its only a matter of time before the vehicle just disintegrates to the point of failure."

Anonymous, (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.2-L V8)

"Clear oat started peeling off"

Anonymous, OK (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.2-L V8)

"The truck is solid white, roof and hood started peeling first, started peeling when the truck was still under extended warranty and paint warranty but they refused to repaint the truck, later the top of bed rails started, I had a white 1997 Pontiac, a white 2000 olds intrigue, a 2000 Buick century all set out side and none of these three white cars had a any peeling, flaking or rusting problem, I feel I got a bad paint job at the factory and GM should have warrantied it"

Nancy-Jim D., TX (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.2-L V8)

"Clear coat started peeling in the past 5 months"

Anonymous, NC (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.7-L V8)
Rust

"It's a CHEVROLET pickup truck. The rocker panels and cab corners always rot out after about 10 years or so. CHEVROLET should either make them from a material that won't rust, or make them easier (and cheaper) to replace."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"Compressor works, but had lost particles clogging part of the condenser. Replace affected parts with new Delco parts, very cold air again."

Ronald G., FL (2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.2-L V8)

"It has been very reliable until a few days ago. Clutch locked up on compressor because compressor is shot. Shut it off and clutch works fine. I determined this to be the final nail in the coffin for my Truck. I would estimate about 1200 or more to fix and get back to proper operation once the dust settles on all the components needed for a proper repair. Coupled with my exhaust leaks and need for tires and disintegrating brake backing that hold the emergency brakes on vehicle I am estimating upwards of $4000.00 or more to keep it road worthy for another michigan winter. So I have decided to look for a new vehicle to replace my 2003 chevrolet."

SEAT BELTS
Apr 22, 2005
A LAP PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT ROUTING THAT IS NOT LOW AND SNUG ON THE HIPS CAN ALLOW THE LAP BELT TO RIDE UP ON AN OCCUPANT'S ABDOMEN INSTEAD OF FITTING LOW AROUND THEIR HIPBONES, AND THEREFORE, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO MORE RISK OF ABDOMINAL AND INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY.
Summary:
ON CERTAIN CREW CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE 2ND ROW CENTER OCCUPANT SEAT BELT ROUTING MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO POSITION THE LAP PORTION OF THE SAFETY BELT LOW AROUND THE HIPS OF OCCUPANTS, ESPECIALLY SMALLER OCCUPANTS, SEATED IN THIS POSITION. APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.

SEAT BELTS

THE STANDARD REQUIRES CHILD SEAT LOWER ANCHORAGES IN TWO SEATING POSITIONS FOR VEHICLES WITH THREE REAR SEATING POSITIONS. THE STANDARD CAB AND CARGO VAN VEHICLES, WHICH ONLY HAVE FRONT SEATING POSITIONS, HAVE AN AIR BAG OFF SWITCH TO DISABLE THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG AND DO NOT HAVE CHILD RESTRAINT LOWER ANCHORAGES IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THE STANDARD REQUIRES PASSENGER SEAT CHILD SEAT LOWER ANCHORAGES IN VEHICLES WITH AN AIR BAG OFF SWITCH. HOWEVER, THE STANDARD DOES NOT REQUIRE VEHICLES WITH ONLY FRONT SEATING POSITIONS TO HAVE LOWER ANCHORAGE PROVISIONS IF THE VEHICLE IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH AN AIR BAG OFF SWITCH.
Summary:
CERTAIN EXTENDED AND REGULAR CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND CARGO VANS CONVERTED TO COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS (CNG) FAIL TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 225, 'CHILD RESTRAINT ANCHORAGE SYSTEMS.' THESE VEHICLES HAVE ONE SEATING POSITION, THE CENTER REAR SEAT, EQUIPPED WITH CHILD RESTRAINT LOWER ANCHORAGES.
What should you do:
TO BRING THE STANDARD CAB AND CARGO VAN VEHICLES INTO COMPLIANCE, DEALERS WILL INJECT EPOXY INTO THE AIR BAG OFF SWITCH TO PREVENT AIR BAG ACTIVATION, RELOCATE THE SWITCH BEHIND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THEN INSTALL A COVER OVER THE RESULTING OPENING. THE SUN VISOR LABEL AND OWNER'S MANUAL WILL ALSO BE CHANGED. THE CORRECTION FOR THE EXTENDED CAB VEHICLE WILL CONSIST OF CHANGING THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT TO A SEAT THAT HAS CHILD RESTRAINT LOWER ANCHORAGES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 9, 2004.
