This version of the Silverado hadn't changed much since its 1999 introduction, so it didn't compete well with its contemporaries. Highlights included a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a full-time mode and a high payload capacity. But its powertrain wasn't particularly smooth. Handling was ungainly and the ride was stiff. Interior quality was also below par.

Randy D., OR (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)
Loose interior trim or moldings

"The headliner does not fit into the retaining area above the driver and passenger windows. there is a gap between the liner next to both of the windows, the material on the backing has peeled away and flaps around while driving. In addition it just plain looks terrible. An additional issue that I just remembered has to due with the gradual failure of the dashboard. first the speedometer, then the fuel gauge, then the tachometer. I had to have it replaced at my cost."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"Rocker panels on both sides of the cab rusted through, and required replacing."

Anonymous, AB (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-L V8)

"The rocker panel below the side doors is rusting from the inside. The mechanics tell us this is a design defect as they were not sealed in the factory. And, you can easily see it on similar year Chevrolet trucks. It has rusted completely through and it has spread to the cab. It would cost us over $800 to fix it because the panels have to be cut off and welded back."

Anonymous, AB (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-L V8)

"L&R Rocker Panels completely rusted thru at 185K.I 1st noticed rust at approx 175K.This seems to be a common problem with GM Trucks. In my opinion there is no excuse in this day and age for a complete rust thru of both Rockers anywhere south of 200K."

Anonymous, DE (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"I had a rust spot on the RH Rear Door, and the gas cap cover hinge rusted through. I had the door spot patched (welded in a patch, put on a new gas cap cover assenbly) and had both areas painted to match the body color. I had the paint buffed to improve the overall appearance."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The PCM fried, which caused the compressor to cycle on and off rapidly and without cooling the system. It had to be replaced along with the compressor which had begun to fail from overuse. The low pressure fitting leaked out the freon again over several months and the whole line had to be replaced."

Anonymous, TX (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Automatic climate control

"Blend doors malfuction"

Anonymous, GA (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Anonymous, MO (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS)

"When turning on the a/c it would blow cold air on the passenger side but would blow out heat on the driver side"

Valari M., NC (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base 4.3-L V6)

"Dual L/R climate control. Left side thermostat would periodically misbehave, causing full heat to blow, even if A/C was on. Turning vehicle off would reset this so A/C would be restored, but it would recur at some point."

Anonymous, MA (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)

"The blower motor control switch only operated on a couple of speed selections. It needed to be replaced."

Milo G., WI (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base 5.3-L V8)

"Had problem with all blend doors"

David T., GA (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Patrick C., LA (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.8-L V8)

"Passenge side gets cold air......drivers side gets hot HOT air."

Anonymous, TX (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"A/c blows hot air at times. Have to shut truck down and restart to get a/c going again."

Anonymous, AL (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-L V8)

"Unresolved as of yet. Happens intermittently for last yr+. When air conditioning is running, randomly blows extremely hot air from front-left & center dash vents. Still works fine on right side dash vents. Vehicle must be COMPLETELY turned off to have a hope of the a/c functioning properly. Doesn't matter if engine under load or idle. Doesn't matter external temps. Quite problematic when it does happen. Truck was used on a ranch in NM prior to our move to TN. Definitely not a good situation in high heat or high heat+humidity settings."

Anonymous, TN (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base 5.3-L V8)

"The individual heater controls have gone out twice since I purchased the vehicle in 2008"

"Fan motor completely failed - bearing failure"

Paul P., CA (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.0-L V8)

"Blower motor switch speed positions stopped controlling fan speed in positions 3, 4, and 5. Thus for both heating and air conditioning the Blower only works in positions 2 and 3. Just waiting for theses blower switch positions to fail next. then not cooling or heat!"

Anonymous, CA (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"fan motor would not shutoff"

Anonymous, MO (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"the blower on driver side blows hot air in summer an cold air in winter replaced it lasted about 2 days and stopped it will cost about 3000.to get the whole dash taken out and find out what is causing the real reason it is doing this. I have talked to a CHEVROLET mechanic and he said the same thing the whole dash would have to come out and I just don't have that kind of money."

Anonymous, (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.8-L V8)
Condenser

"I'm not a car guy...so I'll do my best. A belt on the condenser broke loose which damaged the condenser. Apparently the belt was still flopping around in there which could have broken off and caused damage to my transmission. I had to get the belt removed or a new condenser before driving it."

"heater core needed replacement at a cost of ~$1400"

John A., OR (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base 4.3-L V6)

"Heater core began leaking. Due to design required complete disassembly of dash down to firewall AND evacuation/opening of air conditioning system in order to fix heater. One of the few parts of the vehicle which are not engineered for maintainability. Very labor intensive and expensive to fix a simple problem. Hated to have to break AC to fix heater"

Anonymous, TX (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 4.3-L V6)

"In the fall of 2019 noticed fluid leaking into passenger floorboard, from experience with other Chevrolet trucks new it was a failing heater core. Took it to my local mechanic and had the core replaced. Truck was in the shop for two days."

"The antilock breaks would engage on normal dry braking. I had it repaired but the problem arose again in a year. Discovered no one is able to permanently repair problem. I had to pull fuse to allow normal breaking but now I do not have antilock breaks for winter driving and the fuse also disabled the cruise control."

Anonymous, PA (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base 4.8-L V8)

"Sensor failure and break line failure"

Anonymous, (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"An ABS sensor failed and was replaced. About a yr later truck "Brakes need Service" light came on. Had same part replaced. Part was free w/ warranty but still paid labour. Brake line failed due to corrosion. Had the lines replaced with stainless steel. Brake lines should never corrode through. Had much older trucks that never had a brake line failure."

"The linkage box at the bottom of the steering wheel shaft developed a link. They no longer make rebuild kits available. So it had to be replaced by a 3rd party vendor rebuilt box. Because of where the problem was located the work also necessitated realigning the truck"

Anonymous, CO (2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"A mechanic, not the dealer, told me the OEM rack and pinion was failing and needed to be replaced. I had them replace it. While on a cross country trip towing an RV I noticed front tire wear down to the steel belts. These were relatively new tires. I took it to a Firestone dealer in Washington State. They found the rack and pinion had been improperly installed. It was loose, leaking fluid, and causing the unusual tire wear. They corrected the rack and pinion problem, and replaced the tires. An expensive lesson regarding trusting your mechanic. I have never returned to this shop. I now patronize Firestone and Goodyear. Names I can trust .... I hope."

ON CERTAIN CREW CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE 2ND ROW CENTER OCCUPANT SEAT BELT ROUTING MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO POSITION THE LAP PORTION OF THE SAFETY BELT LOW AROUND THE HIPS OF OCCUPANTS, ESPECIALLY SMALLER OCCUPANTS, SEATED IN THIS POSITION. APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.
What should you do:

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
Feb 08, 2005
IF A SEPARATION OCCURRED AND THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE WERE OPEN, FRAGMENTS FROM THE ACCUMULATOR COULD CAUSE INJURY TO PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. THE PRESENCE OF THIS CRACK OR FRACTURED SURFACE COULD ALLOW THE HYDRAULIC FLUID TO LEAK FROM THE ACCUMULATOR CIRCUIT OF THE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY. THE LOSS OF FLUID WOULD CAUSE INCREASED STEERING AND BRAKING EFFORT AND A CRASH MAY OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Summary:
