This version of the Silverado hadn't changed much since its 1999 introduction, so it didn't compete well with its contemporaries. Highlights included a selectable four-wheel-drive system with a full-time mode and a high payload capacity. But its powertrain wasn't particularly smooth. Handling was ungainly and the ride was stiff. Interior quality was also below par.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Antilock system (ABS)

"The ABS light comes on intermittently. I have checked with my mechanic and he suspects that it is a wheel speed sensor issue. The sensor is in the front wheel bearing and I plan to have the bearing replaced within the next month"

Anonymous, MI (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)

"quit working"

Kevin G., MI (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 5.3-L V8)

"worked but pulsed on dry pavement when not needed."

Anonymous, ON (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 5.3-L V8)

"The ABS computer / controller is going, so when I come to a stop, the right before the vehicle stops it feels like the ABS is coming on (2-4 mph). The mechanic originally thought it was the low speed sensor, which is much cheaper to fix. Codes thrown periodically point to the actual controller itself being the problem, which is much more expensive to fix."

Anonymous, MA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 4.8-L V8)
Calipers

"Caliper locked up"

Carol P., TX (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)

Rust

"Major frame and rear bumper rust. Brake lines corroded and caused a catastrophic brake failure. Found the fuel line was 'weeping' due to corrosion. Rear bumper has major rust from underneath, chrome plating is falling off"

Anonymous, OH (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"Once started, the rust in the rocker panels has accelarated dramatically in the last year. I also have a heavy layer of rust under the hood around the latching mechanism, which several body shops say is highly unusual for this truck"

Anonymous, IA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 5.3-L V8)

"The rocker panels and cab corners have rusted thru. Most of the truck still looks presentable, but the bottom of the cab makes it look like an unprofessional rust-bucket. It doesn't affect operation, and it's not worth the cost of repairs. I envy people who live outside of the "rust belt". Their cars look better for much longer."

Anonymous, IL (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 4.3-L V6)

"Rust along the rocker panels (they are falling apart). Rust at the corner of the cab. Brake lines rusted apart causing brake failure and replacement of all lines."

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The air conditioning stopped working, so we had the A/C recharged, which only lasted about a week. The mechanic recharged again with dye to find that the A/C compressor was what was leaking. Replacing the compressor fixed the issue and the A/C was fine after that. The mechanic thought this was most likely just due to age"

Anonymous, MA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 4.8-L V8)

"At 190K+ miles, I had a refrigerant leak. A refill fixed temporarily. This spring, no A/C again. Just replaced a leaking hose, engine fan (weak clutch) and A/C compressor (weak/intermittent clutch) The a/c on this vehicle has always been outstanding."

Marvin S., CA (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.8-L V8)

"You will be driving down the road with the A/C on and, no matter what speed you are driving or the road conditions, very hot air will start coming out of the vents. Changing the settings on the controls or turning the A/C off does not work. The hot air still comes out. You must pull off the road immediately and turn off the vehicle for a few minutes to allow the system to reset. If you do not, smoke comes out of the dash and the wires melt together. Happened to us 4 times"

Jennifer H., WV (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Base 4.3-L V6)

"The manual heat control arm broke"

Jerry S., SK (2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Z71 5.3-L V8)

"We’ve been told it’s an actuator problem that is well known in the CHEVROLET vehicles. There was no recall and the vehicle was under warranty when this started. We purchased the truck from my father but he didn’t have it repaired while under warranty. The AC will suddenly blow HOT air. Initially, we could turn off the motor and restart and the problem would stop. Now it’s a constant problem. CHEVROLET is aware of this issue and any mechanic we’ve asked always says it’s your actuator motor. Expensive repair due to the dash needing to be pulled to effect repair. Horrible in the summer here in the South. https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/gm-air -conditioning-responds-439572983.html"

SEAT BELTS
Apr 22, 2005
A LAP PORTION OF THE SEAT BELT ROUTING THAT IS NOT LOW AND SNUG ON THE HIPS CAN ALLOW THE LAP BELT TO RIDE UP ON AN OCCUPANT'S ABDOMEN INSTEAD OF FITTING LOW AROUND THEIR HIPBONES, AND THEREFORE, CAN EXPOSE THEM TO MORE RISK OF ABDOMINAL AND INTERNAL ORGAN INJURY.
Summary:
ON CERTAIN CREW CAB PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE 2ND ROW CENTER OCCUPANT SEAT BELT ROUTING MAY MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO POSITION THE LAP PORTION OF THE SAFETY BELT LOW AROUND THE HIPS OF OCCUPANTS, ESPECIALLY SMALLER OCCUPANTS, SEATED IN THIS POSITION. APPROPRIATE USE OF A CHILD SEAT OR BOOSTER SEAT, AS RECOMMENDED FOR SMALL CHILDREN, DOES IMPROVE THE FIT CONDITION FOR THIS USER GROUP. IN ADDITION TO INSTRUCTIONS ON PROPER INFANT AND YOUNG CHILD RESTRAINT (WITH CHILD SEATS OR BOOSTERS), SPECIAL VERBIAGE FOR RESTRAINING OLDER CHILD IS INCLUDED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL. ALSO, THE SUGGESTED SEAT BELT FIT/ROUTING FOR ADULTS, IRRESPECTIVE OF SEATING POSITION, IS DESCRIBED IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL TEXT.
What should you do:

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
Feb 08, 2005
IF A SEPARATION OCCURRED AND THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE WERE OPEN, FRAGMENTS FROM THE ACCUMULATOR COULD CAUSE INJURY TO PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. THE PRESENCE OF THIS CRACK OR FRACTURED SURFACE COULD ALLOW THE HYDRAULIC FLUID TO LEAK FROM THE ACCUMULATOR CIRCUIT OF THE BOOSTER ASSEMBLY. THE LOSS OF FLUID WOULD CAUSE INCREASED STEERING AND BRAKING EFFORT AND A CRASH MAY OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Summary:
CERTAIN TRUCKS, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, AND VANS EQUIPPED WITH BOSCH HYDRO-BOOST BRAKE ASSEMBLIES, THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE BOOSTER PRESSURE ACCUMULATOR MAY CRACK AND SEPARATE FROM THE HYDRO-BOOST ASSEMBLY DURING NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS.
What should you do:
