The Silverado is an easy truck to live with, thanks to its comfortable ride and reasonable floor height. Access is fairly easy, as is cargo loading. The truck also offers generous towing and payload capacity. A six-speed automatic transmission aids acceleration and fuel economy, while selectable full-time four-wheel drive adds safety in slippery conditions.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"The side panel on the drivers door started to peel back and one day it was just about off flopping in the wind driving down the street. I took it off and put is aside. Not the other side of the truck is starting to peel back. I checked on getting them retaped to the door and was told this was not possible. I would have to purchase new panels and then have them painted once attached to the vehicle. With the miles and the other problems it was not worth it. Just waiting for a time when I can trade it in for a better truck, not GM. I will say that overall the vehicle runs good and I would purchase another GM if it wasn't for the cheap tape and switches they are using."

"Both sides of the wheel well housing started to rust out on the rear quarter panels"

Anonymous, SK (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"purchased in 2017 rust-free and it started rusting almost right away over the rear wheels and bottom of passenger door. Those spots are now severely rusted, because of that the truck looks a lot older than it is."

Anonymous, MN (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 5.3-L V8)

"The rubber door seal at the bottom of the door frame is right where you drag your feet across it getting in or out. It developed a gap there allowing water into the gap. When I pulled it back it has got serious rust in there on the floor panel or rocker panel. Thats the only place I have any rust, it otherwise looks like a new truck."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The rear wheel wells show rust bubbles after 10 years and less than 60000 miles. Vehicle has been garaged every day including thru wisconsin winters. I see this with almost every CHEVROLET or GM truck around the same age. Why?!?!?"

Anonymous, WI (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

4WD/AWD components

"4 wheel drive does not always disengage after being put into auto or 4 wheel feature"

Terri B., PA (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.3-L V6)
Differential

"Front differential had to be rebuilt. The owners manual states drive the 4 wheel drive vehicle in the automatic position. The mechanics at the chev. dealer stated use 2 wheel drive unless you are on icy roads. The front wheel drive components will wear out quickly if you use the auto position for all driving."

Anonymous, WA (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 4.8-L V8)
Driveshaft or axle

"leaking seal at back of transmission and drive shaft"

Anonymous, (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.3-L V6)

"Had to have axle seals replaced due to leakage"

Peter W., FL (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 4.8-L V8)
Electrical failure

"The engine control module quit and could only be driven up to 30 mph.with no power."

Scott M., GA (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.8-L V8)

"Battery failure without any warning or symptoms. Cost: $1,500! Was told the fender strut had to be disassembled, the battery cables needed to be replaced (and that the cables contained several other wires inside to control the Computer, A/C, etc.) which I have never heard of before. Plus $150 towing charge."

Jerry M., TX (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"The speed control resistor went out again. Replaced fan motor as well just in case it might have played a role in it"

Anonymous, TX (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 5.3-L V8)
Stability control (ESC)

"often, usually in the winter, I’ll be driving and the truck starts shaking, the engine runs very bad. The traction control lights, stabilization lights come on and ABS lights all light up on the dash. It’s like it’s going into a protective mode. If I’m on the highway in traffic the engine immediately cuts out and I’m forced to try to get off the road before it completely shuts down if I turn the engine off for 10 minutes it will start right up and run good again but sometimes another 25 miles it shuts down again it’s very dangerous in heavy city driving In the summer it rarely happens If it’s below zero I know it’s going to happen Many people have taken their trucks to dealerships and they’ve changed many parts only to have it happen again Tell the people about this problem"

Bradley S., (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)
Traction control

"The sensor is bad, it needs to be replaced. It turns off the traction control. It's too expensive to replace so I just deal with it."

Anonymous, CT (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"This was right after we purchased the pickup. It would lose cruise control, traction control/Stability control while driving. That this was a major safety concern the dealership did repair it. It was apparently an electronic component that was triggered when putting the cruise control on."

Anonymous, WY (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"Sometimes my truck shuts down and my traction control lights illuminate as well as ABS and Stability control The truck sounds like it’s going to blow up and it loses its 4wheel drive No power and if I’m in heavy traffic it’s extremely dangerous. It’s like traffic is going along ar 65 mph and someone puts on the brakes but no brake lights come on when I pull over to the shoulder and shut the engine off for 10 minutes the engine will run like nothing happened Check engine light does not come on so there’s no code to check"

Bradley S., (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)

"The traction control is tied to the ABS system, so when the ABS fails, so does the traction control"

Anonymous, AR (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 WT 5.3-L V8)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"Check engine light from mass air flow sensor and high alcohol content in my fuel system from ethanol gasoline. My throttle body on the carburetor was sticking and needed cleaning."

Dennis J., MI (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Fuel cap

"seal started to leak"

Anonymous, IA (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"The check engine light kept coming on every few days. They check several things finally went and got a new OEM gas cap, that was the solution"

Diane T., OH (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Fuel injection system

"The Throttle body had to be replaced, with less than 25000 miles even though I had had it for several years prior and the shop said GM has had problems with the part. But had not recalled it."

Diane T., OH (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The check engine light came on took it to the dealer. I was told there was nothing wrong couldn't duplicate the problem. So they charged me 96 dollars for looking at it. I took it to an independent shop. They said it has a bad Throttle Body, I was skeptical. They were sure, replaced it problem solved"

Diane T., OH (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Fuel pump

"After a fill-up at the gas station, the smell of gas just kept getting stronger and stronger. I got it home, left it running in the driveway. I looked under the truck and there was already a puddle of gas. Immediately shut it off! I researched the leak online, figured it was definitely the fuel, and ordered one from rockauto.com. I watched videos to learn how to replace the fuel on my particular truck. I'm a 100% disabled veteran with a bad back and a horribly bad foot. To say I'm living on a fixed income that barely pays the bills, is the understatement of the century! So I knew I was gonna have to do this myself. Not good, especially when you consider after doing a job like this, it takes at least a week to recover and get my pain levels back down to a tolerable number! I hope, and pray for miracles!! I pray some day, some how, some way, that I can get a newer truck!! This CHEVROLET Silverado is now 11 years old, with about 106,000 miles on it. Other than the TPMS sensor's batteries dying inside the tires, and the TPS(Throttle Position Sensor) going out. It has been a great truck!! The Silverado Z71 was always my dream truck, and this one did not disappoint!! I can only hope and pray that I can get at least another 10 years out of this one! Please no issues and no repairs for the next 10 years! The repairs hurt me too bad!!!"

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine computer

"Faulty oil pressure sensor - causes check engine light to illuminate & disables autostart feature."

Anonymous, AK (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Throttle position sensor to be precise. TPS failure resulted in reduced power on cross country drive. Could only maintain 45 mph. Subject to some sort of “bulletin “ in the past. Thought I had it fixed in 2014, but it failed again. Paid a dealer for part and install. Annoyed that CHEVROLET didn’t take care of this defect gratis."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid 6.0-L V8 hybrid)

"Engine light on dash came on, and truck ran roughly. took to Chevrolet dealer in South Burlington Vermont. Dealer stated the engine computer was malfunctioning, cost was about $350 to fix, dealer said not covered by warranty"

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The compressor seems to cycle on and off to much and not properly cooling the truck. It really only noticeable on really hot days. I took in several times over the last couple of years only to be told its working correctly. It clearly is not."

Anonymous, OH (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Engine Major

Engine rebuild or replacement, cylinder head, head gasket, turbo or supercharger, timing chain or timing belt.

What Owners Say

Cylinder head

"A variable valve lifter failed on a long drive at about 88000 miles. It required removing the exhaust manifold and cylinder head to fix. The mechanic (and others I asked) said the variable lifters are unreliable, and others were bound to fail in the coming years. All advised that I should take the opportunity to replace ALL the valve lifters. Cost was about $4100, and is the first repair of this magnitude I've had."

Anonymous, FL (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Hybrid 6.0-L V8 hybrid)

"A oil deflection device was installed in the engine because the active fuel management (where cylinders are turned off for fuel management) caused excessive build up in the engine heads) Also I don't believe the remaining oil life meter is accurate. The oil was in the motor for too long when I followed the oil life left indication on the dash cluster"

Don W., VA (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"Check engine light started flashing and Driver Information Cluster indicated several errors in February. I took it to a dealer and they recommended a full engine rebuild because they found burnt oil residue in cylinder 1. I searched the Internet for information and found a technical service bulletin (TSB) about the problem that was on revision N for so. It turns out GM knew about the problem since they introduced cylinder deactivation a couple years ago. Of the problem is identified early, the fix is just a new valve cover versus a complete rebuild. I wish GM would have contacted owners to recommend a new valve cover. Basically a cheap insurance policy."

Anonymous, IA (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

""Check Engine" light displayed, took truck to dealership. Service rep stated oil on spark plug. Contacted Geico who provided auto breakdown insurance. Geico pushed engine problem down the road until truck was out of warranty. Few months later, Check Engine light again displayed and truck started losing power. Truck towed to dealership, serious engine problem, had to make decision to repair or replace. Chose to replace engine."

Anonymous, IL (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"At 30000 miles I had to have the camshaft replaced. Original quote by GM $7900.00. After I escalated to a supervisor they did it for $1400.00. I was told by the GM Shop that it was defective but because it was out of 3 year time limit I had to pay something. I think GM was wrong and I doubt that I will ever buy another GM product"

Paul J., CA (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"5.3 engine has a problem getting enough oil to camshaft, causing premature wear on camshaft, leading to failure. Mine went bad at 95000 miles, dealer would do nothing.GM fianly paid 45% percent of cost.still cost me $2200.00 and I'retired on fixed income!Allways maintained it,and had everything done at dealer. They told me stuff happens and they owe me nothing!!After much research, found out this is a common problem with 2007 to 2010 chevy 5.3 engines.Seems to be related to small oiling holes,in the"

"With the electric windows I have one window that will go up and down when you want them to. The passenger window along with the rear windows will not operate at all. If you play with the buttons long enough the windows will go down but then you have a bigger problem trying to get them to close. We just do not use the windows for fear of not being able to raise them back up to secure the vehicle. The problem is with the Cruise Control. Sometimes it work and sometime, majority of the time it does not. You cannot engage the cruise control itself. It will disengage when you tap on the brakes and when you shut it off. This have been a problem for the past 30,000 miles. I am very dissatisfied with my truck."

Maurice W., WI (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)
Ball joints

"Left front ball joints required replacement discovered during state annual inspection. Too much movement. However, not decernable during road test."

Anonymous, PA (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Had inside wear on both front tires. Took it to chevy dealer a all they did was an alignment. They said it i had to get a new bracket it would cost over $700 and then another $925 for 4 new tires. Went for 2nd opinion at a local gsrage, 69$ for alugnment and if i needed new brackets it would be another $200. During their work found serious play in ball joints. After their repairs i still got out for less than the chevy dealer wanted for just replacing the bracket and tires"

Maurice W., WI (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)
Power steering pumps and hoses

"I live in Interior Alaska and the power steering hoses weren't manufactured for sub-zero (-30F) temperatures so the power steering hose busted twice. The second time I paid the difference between the OEM warranty supplied hose and an aftermarket hose that is rated for these temperatures."

Victor A., AK (2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
