Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

Calipers

"Drivers side front caliper stuck and ate the pads and the rotor. Not covered by the extended warranty."

Eugene P., IL (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.0-L V8)
Normal routine brake wear

"It has abnormal break wear in my opinion."

Anonymous, AL (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Due to mileage I need new brake pads and rotors. Not a big deal, just maintenance"

Mike Z., MN (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Premature brake wear

"There was a grinding noise from the left front brake. Just one side of the disk was involved but I got no feed back"

Edward S., MI (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 6.0-L V8)

"replaced front brake pads 50000 and front wheel bearing"

Bob G., LA (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"Covered in previous comment."

Eugene P., IL (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.0-L V8)
Pulsation or vibration

"When I test drove this vehicle in early April 2019, there was a bad vibration when braking. Otherwise this truck was terrific. The dealer agreed to fix it, or my purchase deal was off. They found the trouble to be the rear brake drums, which were replaced. I have only driven this vehicle about 600km since buying it."

Robert S., BC (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Rotors

"Had the pads replaced, rotors turned and they started squeaking after about 5000 miles"

Anonymous, AL (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"found crack lines in rotors"

Harold S., FL (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Squeaking

"When driving I hear squeaking from my tire rotation. I needed a new front and rear brakes. I have over 135,000 miles, its just maintenance"

Mike Z., MN (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Door bumper guards attached with double stick foam tape peeled off at 5 years."

Herbert H., (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Trim on rear door rubbing on front door."

Anonymous, KS (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 6.2-L V8)

"Dashboard cracking at 4 years of life. Door pulls/handles (plastic parts) broken at 3 years of life."

Herbert H., (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"The paint on the exterior trim has faded and worn off. The cost to repair would be about $1400. This should not happen."

Anonymous, MA (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)

"The front bumper is part steel part plastic so stone chips on the steel start to rust and it looks terrible"

Norman T., ON (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Paint peeling from door handles - known problem yet Gm will not fix."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Rust

"front of truck is rusting"

Anonymous, AB (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"I traded a 2005 Silverado that had rust issues but ran great to upgrade to a better body and a year 2013 that CR said was CHEVROLET's better year. This year, the paint on the 2013 started peeling inside the wheel well. The body shop said it is common in this truck because of the material between the metal holds moisture. I am basically now in the same boat as the 2005. Very disappointed with this."

David L., PA (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"THE COATING ON THE FRAME IS PEELING OFF CAUSING RUST TO FORM ON THE FRAME. CHEVROLET HAS A TCB ON THIS PROBLEM AND IS WILLING TO ONLY PAY HALF FOR THE REPAIR. WHAT KIND OF CRAP IS THAT? TOYOTA IS CHANGING WHOLE FRAMES FOR THEIR TRUCKS UP TO 15 YRS. OLD, SO GUESS WHAT MY NEXT TRUCK WILL BE NOT ANY CHROLET PRODUCT AT ALL. THIS SHOWS THAT THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE THAT PURCHASE THEIR VEHICLES. THEY SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BAILED OUT AT ALL."

Chris G., OH (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Anonymous, AB (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"The truck had 4 doors, but you couldn't open the back one without opening the front one first."

Anonymous, FL (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Locks and latches

"Driver side door handle fell apart twice in the last two years, once covered by warranty second time-warranty had expired. Cost: $220 dollars for repair by Chevrolet dealer. Took less than 1/2 hr to replace. Part is a NORMAL shelf item-stocked by dealer. Assume that Chevrolet is aware that this is a COMMON fault i.e. Cheap plastic parts that requires replacement of the whole door opener assembly"

Frank T., FL (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.0-L V8)

"Exterior rear passenger door handle broke off, plastic, dealer repair under warrenty."

Dan K., CA (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"I have had the truck for four years and I am the sole driver and occupant of it. It has 34000 miles on it total. The doors and door locks get very limited use. I have had three of the four door handles/locks come off in my hand, they just simply fell off. I have never ever had this happen on any vehicle I have ever owned and I've own and driven about 30 in the past 57 years over a total of a million million and this has never happened. I have contacted the dealer and general motors and although the dealer attest to the substandard quality of the door handles and that it is a recurring problem upon my contact with General Motors they refused to do anything, have even stopped communication with me without explanation. And I am a long term customer of 57 years and have purchased over 20 GM vehicles over that span of time. Wonder is, how do they treat their other customers?"

Douglas G., LA (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"both of my door handles had to be replaced because of yhe cheap plastic parts gm used.the doors are very heavy, and the plastic inside parts of the doors were not stong enough to hold up."

Anonymous, NC (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Seat belts

"The drivers belt would click in but after a minute or so it would become undone. dealer said it was broke and replaced it for around $250.00"

Dan K., CA (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Windows

"power window controller drivers master. works only one window"

Anonymous, MN (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The driver control for the power window on the passenger side will not allow the window to go down. I have to reach over and put the window down on the other side, but can put the window up on the driver side. The entire module needs replaced to fix this problem, which is expensive."

David L., PA (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 5.3-L V8)

"Rocker arm broke at 99,000 miles; 6000 miles later the lifters had to be replaced that accommodated the 8-cylinder to 4-cylinder shift. Another associated part needed to be replaced but Chevy put a nation-wide halt on selling the part because they were having problems with it"

Anonymous, MO (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LS 4.8-L V8)

"Sticking valves"

Charles H., TX (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Cathy B., FL (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.8-L V8)
Engine rebuild or replacement

"oil pressure low. gm finally replaced engine , cams, bottom bearings and piston 5 show excessive wear. New motor is great very good oil pressure. motor sent to GM to find out what went wrong, oil pump was fine , but they think oil channel in motor was comprimized"

Ron D., IA (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Rear door of cub cab filling up with water. It took awhile to understand the nosie the water made inside the door. Sounded like a half filled 5 gallon jug was in the back of the cab, Door was not draining properly. I'm sure that door will rust out first!"

Michael R., NM (2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 6.0-L V8 hybrid)

"This shows up as a code P0130 which is a cylinder issue. It is a known problem with these trucks and engine. If you are lucky the repair is the wiring and spark plug in the cylinder - mine was in #1. The car repair people knew just what it was because they have a memo from CHEVROLET re: a known issue and what the repair service should try to fix it. My mechanic was able to fix for a cost of $115.00 but no guarantee that it won't happen again or be worse. I'm disgusted with car manufacturers. There are so many issues on cars it's ridiculous."
