Road Test

Chevrolet has improved the Silverado 1500, with increased payload and towing capacities, plus a deeper bed versus the previous model. But the redesign doesn’t match the fancy cabin or comfortable ride of some competitors.

The Silverado’s biggest change is in the powertrain. Its 5.3-liter V8 engine can now be paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and the combination provides better throttle response and quicker acceleration, answering one of our chief criticisms of the dull, flat-footed previous generation. The new eight-speed automatic transmission and the loss of about 300 pounds help the Silverado achieve 17 mpg overall, a 1-mpg gain over the previous truck.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Apple CarPlay

"sometimes stops working. Need to restart the vehicle multiple times or just wait."

Anonymous, FL (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Along with Auto Stop-Start issue mentioned earlier, I have now had issues, although intermittent, with CarPlay not working and seemingly unable to recognize my device, or any other device when plugged in. It will suddenly stop working, then work again. It started after my stop start issue, so I assume it has something in common with that problem. The dealer can't replicate it, so they can't fix it. They tell me its Apple's fault."

Anonymous, WA (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Display screen freezes up

"Screen freezes up and cannot use it to back up truck."

Anonymous, GA (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 4.3-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"Started soon after purchased, took to dealer, replaced radio, still doing it, very unreliable."

Anonymous, GA (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 4.3-L V6)

"Screen went blank and had to be replaced and that took 3 weeks to obtain a new screen and install."

Anonymous, SK (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"Just stops working, after a few minutes it reboots"

Anonymous, OK (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"occasionally goes completely blank. Need to restart truck ro wait."

Anonymous, FL (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"For no apparent reason, the screen goes blank or jumps to another function."

John P., SC (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"Dash display and infotainment display would go blank intermittently. Software update by dealer fixed the problem."

Anonymous, VA (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"When other devices have been in the truck it stops pairing to my iPhone, I have to stop and manually re-pair"

Anonymous, OK (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Software update fixes

"vehicle started and immediately displayed warning "steering control inoperative, service vehicle immediately". Steering was inoperative and vehiclescheduled for towing back to dealer."

Anonymous, NV (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

"When I bought it, there were 3 or 4 pending recalls on software. After I took possession, there was a recall for brake or reverse lights."

Anonymous, NM (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST 5.3-L V8)

"Gage said oil needed change when I still had 95% it was software malfunction.. also recall with something under seat could cause fire"

Anonymous, NY (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4.3-L V6)
Voice control commands

"The new system does not work as well as the previous system. The voice recognition is poor."

John P., SC (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 6.2-L V8)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

"There were multiple recall notices on the braking system computer program."

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Brakes software had to be replaced twice due to recall."

Anonymous, CA (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"It would arbitrarily lock down hard when going slow."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"This was part of 2 recalls. However I did experience partial brake failure before the dealership was able to adrwss the recall. The partial failure occurred after the dealerships were closed. We contacted GM for advice on what to do in terms of getting the vehicle to a dealership. We received conflicting information as to what to do with the vehicle."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Brake assist will go out leaving you with manual pedal meaning if you want to stop you need to stand on it in order to do so. And there are no warning lights that appear on the dash when this happens. The dealer reprogrammed the software and brake module 5 times. No luck"

Anonymous, OH (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Master cylinder

"Truck had 300 miles on it. Entire braking system was defective and had ito be replaced. Vehicle couldn't be fixed for 8 weeks Due to parts not available and was not drivable"

Anonymous, NJ (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Unsure 4.3-L V6)
Premature brake wear

"System wear indicator showed 16X the actual wear on the brakes. Recall issued!"

Anonymous, OH (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"1 - 2 shift is very harsh occasionally when cold."

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"When coming to a stop, transmission downshifts abruptly and very hard. Started about four months ago. Dealer flushed the transmission per service bulletin and it is improved, but the problem is not completely resolved. I will live with it."

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Problem started from day 1. Dealer just shrugged shoulders and said it was normal."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST 5.3-L V8)

"When I first drove the truck it shifted hard from 1-2nd gear. It happened 15 times in the first week, usually under 40 mph. Also had difficulty maintaining speed with cruise set and it felt like it was surging."

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission seems to lunge the truck forward and roughly shift at times while going thru the gears. Lunging forward is the biggest problem, especially after a coasted stop."

Anonymous, OH (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Shifting is so abrupt and clunky sometimes I think the rear end has left the truck. During some initial shifts into a gear the vehicle lurches forward or backward. It is dangerous and deserves a recall. Dealer says it's normal. Big whiff by the General. Integrity?"

Anonymous, MI (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Electric System

Alternator, starter, hybrid battery and related systems, regular battery, battery cables, engine harness, coil, ignition switch, electronic ignition, distributor or rotor failure, spark plugs and wires failure.

What Owners Say

Body control module

"The Auto Stop-Start system stopped operating all together after about 4,500 miles. No matter what I did I could not get it to operate once the problem started. This resulted in a 7 MPG reduction in fuel efficiency. I made 4 visits to the dealer over two months in an attempt to get the issue repaired permanently. The dealer was able to reset the system and make it operate for only a few days afterwards, but they were unable to get the system to continue to operate beyond that. Every time after a day or two the system would stop working again. Once it hit the Lemon Law number of visits for my state, I tried to get GM to replace the vehicle. They wanted me to keep taking it back in until it got repaired. I gave up on GM's help, so I hired an attorney for a Lemon Law and federal warranty law claim against GM. Now I'm waiting for GM to decide what they are going to do about my claim."

Anonymous, WA (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Headlights

"I don't know if this qualifies precisely as a "problem", as they do work, the lights come on, it's just that in general, the Headlights are lousy at illuminating the drive terrain. So much so that combined with the comparatively low IIHS crash ratings I would not buy it again. I was astonished at how lousy they were!"

Anonymous, UT (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Tire pressure monitor

"System did not display correct pressure. I had to have warranty work done to reset."

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"We had the truck a few months, when one day we noticed a musty smell. We couldn't figure out what it was, and the smell wouldn't go away. One day we lifted the rubber mat and realized the carpets inside the truck were soaked. It had been wet for so long, there was mold growing underneath the rubber mat. After taking it to the dealer, the problem turned out to be that the back window was not sealed completely when it was installed. So every time it rained the water would leak in around the back window. The window had to be replaced as well as the entire carpet throughout the truck."

Anonymous, NY (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST Unsure)
Squeaks or rattles

"A trim piece on the roof of the truck was not attached securely from the factory and would cause increasing vibration at approximately 50 mph and greater."

Anonymous, IL (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Transfer case

"Something really loud happens when I put the vehicle into auto 4wd. It is loud and very annoying and is always there. Glad I only have to tolerate it during the winter months. Not expected from such an expensive product. Dealer says it is normal."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Body Hardware

Power or manual windows, locks and latches, tailgate, hatch or trunk, doors or sliding doors, mirrors, seat controls, safety belts, sunroof, convertible top.

What Owners Say

Windows

"Back window leaks along the top. Started several months ago. Have service appointment next week for repair."

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.
